Summer was hot. It was hot enough that the street looked to be covered in water only a few yards from where one stood, and even the children were lethargic in the worst of the heat, sitting in whatever shade they could or playing slow games out in the sun. Occasionally a burst of activity would bring out hidden energy, a quick fight or a burst of laughter.
Marie hadn't been able to find her circle of friends, and both her and her pokemon companion agreed that they were probably inside. It was just as stuffy inside as it was outside though, since her house had broken air conditioning-something that was being fixed, both parents had told her.
In any case, even cautious Heldani agreed with her, the ditto currently spread out next to her in the cute shape of a skitty, something that Marie sometimes fantasized about him settling as. Of course, it wasn't possible to know what it would be before he actually did settle, and anyways that day was far off.
They were both exercising the fact that this area contained mostly younger kids than her, and therefore making them weaker than her, to take up as much a shade as she could beneath the old, large, tree that they were under. They couldn't take up the entire area, but at least they weren't fighting to keep themselves in the shade like some six year olds on the other side of the trunk.
"I wish Ant would hurry up 'n finish her piano lessons. She always has a idea for fun." Marie sighed, drawing stick figures in the dirt in front of her.
"I wish you didn't hang around her so much. She gets you in so much trouble, and most of those plans lead you into the second ring, and you know you aren't supposed to be there." Heldani rolled onto his back, making it easier for him to look her into the eye to emphasize his point. "And it's an before a vowel."
"We haven't ever gotten into trouble." She wiped out her drawing so she could start another one, only rolling her eyes at his grammar correction. School was out for the day, why should she have to pay attention to every little nuance? She spoke better than most of the kids around here anyways.
"Only because of luck." Agitated, Heldani shifted forms to a charmander, making Marie scoot over some to escape the heat of his tail. Why couldn't he ever make her understand that there was a reason she wasn't supposed to go into the other rings without one of their guardians?
"Hey!" Less worried about her safety-For one they were in the third ring right now, and for another she had the youthful belief she could get out of any danger-she glared at Heldani. For a few tense moments both of them glared at each other, before they both sighed in unison.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry."
Heldani shifted again, this time into a meowth and stretched out again, after rubbing his head against Marie's arm in acceptance of her forgiveness and offering his apology at the same time. Marie hugged him in her turn, and both of them returned to idle conversation, this time complaining about the heat of the day.

Widda licked the bloody scratch on Cecil's cheek, as the pair walked slowly toward home. Cecil grimaced, as he had been trying to take his most recent wounds like a man, and having a small sentret draped over his shoulders trying to clean him up, didn't help.
"Lay off, will you?" he finally asked irritably.
"No! You shouldn't have been talking to those kids. They're willing to push any Third Ringer around," Widda scolded, as Cecil kicked an unfortunate stone along the walk.
"So?" he questioned belligerently. "I can push back."
"You didn't do a good job of it. I'm all worn out from shifting. Lecha's tough, and I'll bet Lenny has her practice," the little sentret snorted angrily. "Good thing we'd been working on that growlithe form. She likes to bite."
"You could take her in a fair fight," Cecil petted his pokemon encouragingly.
"Just you see her in a fair fight. Oh, look! It's Heldani," Widda raced down his shoulders and looked over at the tree. "Come on, let's go say hi to them."
"I dun wanna," Cecil pouted. "Ant's always nearby. She dun like me."
"Silly," Widda shook her head, already bounding over to the tree.

"Oh!" Heldani stood up, a growing grin on his face. Whatever either of their partners thought, Heldani quite enjoyed the company of Widda. "Hello."
Marie didn't bother to get up-she might lose her space-and anyways, Cecil was headed this way. He didn't look happy, but then, anytime Marie saw him he didn't. Didn't he ever smile? It didn't occur to her that she was nearly always with Ant when she saw him, and that it might be possible that her friend might not get along with everyone.
"'Ello, Cecil." Aw. Would she have to share her shadow-space?
A significant look from Heldani and a whispered, "Be nice" convinced her he had mind-reading powers. And, not wanting to have another fight-however brief-with her partner, she sighed and decided that she wouldn't /stop/ him from sitting down, but she wasn't going to invite him either. That wasn't being mean, now was it?
"What've you been doing?" Her interest was perked as she noticed the scratch on his cheeks-hardly unexpected in children, but at the moment she would have snagged anything that had a possible interesting story behind it. Anything was better than drawing pictures in the dirt...At least, after the twentieth or so picture.

Widda pretended to touch noses with Heldani. It wasn't that she didn't want to be polite, but after a shift mock-battle with two second ringers Widda didn't really want any pokemon touching her. She knew Cecil said that she was overly sensitive, but she didn't like psychical contact from anyone but him, and even then it was fleeting. "What have you two been up to?" she asked quietly, as her partner came to a halt, and stuck out his chest with pride at the story he was about to relate. "Ant isn't around, is she?" Widda added in an undertone. "Cecil's feeling stropy, and I don't want to get into another fight today."
Cecil, oblivious to the chatter of the two pokemon grinned like the hero he so obviously had been this afternoon. "Oh, nothin' much," he managed to sound off hand. "Just hears Larry and his Second Ring pal planning to put glue in our school desks, so I told 'em they'd better not, and set Widda on his Lecha. Widda was wonderful. She went all growlithe, and then Lecha was all grrrr.... and Widda growled back, and Lecha shifted into a houndour, and tried to bite Widda, but Widda's throat fur protected her, and she bit Lecha back, and she would have won, only Kinsdale, Larry's crony, picked me up and threw me in the school compost heap," the scowl reappeared on his face, and he kicked the ground, before brightening up. "It was a good fight, though. I've been wanting to show Larry up for aaaaaaaages. He thinks he's so smart just 'cause he knows his times and division tables."

The young third ringer turned to look at the obviously prosperous boy. His mother had always told him not to talk to strangers, but Etavirp's blunt pushy manner annoyed the prickly Cecil. "Who are you?" he challenged, blue eyes glaring. "I've never seen you before."
"Oh brother," Widda muttered, reacting instinctively to Cecil's bristling reaction by changing into a nidorina without meaning to.

Cecil looked at the brat for a long moment. What the heck was he talking about? The rich booby must think him stupid or something. The Second Ring didn't have a school -- one reason his parents had firmly established themselves in the third ring when they realized that their family was already fairly large, and might grow larger.
"You're lying," Cecil moved into a defensive stance, his short legs apart, scowl locked in place. "You're just some rich First Ringer out here for kicks, aren'tcha? Go away. We don't like stupid dummies like you here."

Marie stood up next to Cecil as the other boy came along, before she could reply to his story. She might not actually be the best of friends with Cecil-That spot was reserved for Ant-he was a Third Ringer like her, while the boy facing them was not.
Although, apparently money didn't have everything to do with brains, if he thought them so stupid as to believe he went to a non-existent school.
Next to her, Heldani had shifted into the form he preferred to fight with, a murkrow. "And she was doing so good to...not a single fight, all day..." He shared Widda's feelings, for certain.
"You aren't very smart. Coming out here all by yourself, and then lying."

((You do know the difference between "quarry" and "quarrel," right? -.-))
"Go away or you'll get one, you dummy," Cecil snarled at Etavirp.
"You know," Widda said to Haldani, "I don't like it when Cecil gets stroppy, but this guy is so arrogant. Hmm," she loped over to her partner. "Cecil, why don't we go somewhere else? We could go catch fish down by the river, maybe? C'mon, it'll be more fun than hanging around here. Heldani and Marie can come with us."
"Yeah, maybe we'll see Bess and Twig -- only," Cecil turned away from Etavirp, and glanced at Marie. "They might not like her."
"They will if you explain how cool she and Heldani are."

Marie crossed her arms behind Cecil, sticking her tongue out at Etavirp. "Yea, go away. You don't belong here."
Heldani tilted his head to the side, his feathers ruffled up from feeling Marie's growing...Well, not quite anger, but anticipation of a fight. "Fish?" His feathers calmed down as he overheard that, for fish happened to be one of his favorite foods-Although Marie didn't like it very much, oddly enough.
Marie looked at Cecil, wondering whatever he was talking about, and whispering the question to Heldani, still looking at Etavirp. Whatever was he doing down in the third ring-Oh yea. He'd said he was looking for his sister...
Well, what was she doing down here?
She smelt something suspicious...What if they were planning an attack on the Third Ringers?
OoC: Just to clarify this, by her thinking they might be planning an attack, but an adult would think of it as a prank. Not like their going to be stabbing each other or anything. 0.o

"I'm happy to give ya one, though, Eva-twerp," Cecil boasted at Etavirp. Widda shook her head, but did thrust out her thorny armor aggressively to back her partner up. She would rather be off fishing as a seel, now having aired the suggestion, but her partner's rabid dislike of the stranger was telling on her own temperment. She could already tell that the kid was rude, and thought himself above his age group, just from the way he talked, and butted in when he didn't know anyone. Now those characteristics formed an evil picture of a territorial aggressor. Which made Widda growl at him, rather than amble away.
