Setting:
It's the open ocean...so you'd better to make sure you have a LARGE water Pokemon to ride, or find one...or maybe a boat, or something. Basically...water. Salty water. And lots of it. Usually it's pretty mild weather-wise, but trainers are cautioned to stay off the route if it gets stormy, as the waves can get high. This route goes to a small-ish outpost island called, wouldn't you know it, Outpost Island. Much of the island is actually underwater, and there is a small coral reef around there. Because of this, you see different Pokemon when you near it. Also be on the lookout for large migrating birds, who often roost on the island, and will battle you on the way. There have also been sightings of wayward ghosts, air-floaters, disguisers, and water dragons, so be on constant lookout!
There are Pokemon here in all groups...so make sure you have a well-rounded team with you who can handle the long journey across the sea route.

POKEMON MUTATION ALERT:
Species: Salty Dratini
Type: Water/Dragon
Ability: Swift Swim
Researched Knowledge:
(From the Journal of Corwin, who was originally called in to investigate the matter of the new colony).
This species of dratini has mutated, the better to fit in with the salt water enviornment. As with most dragons, these dratini are very territorial and will battle other members of the colony if their space is infringed upon. Even the youngest know thundershock, which is devastating in the salt water. Just from the reaction of those dratini on the recieving end it would appear that they have evolved to become the water type. It's a cruel system, but I believe that this occured because only the strongest can withstand the thundershocks that they release, meaning that only the strongest survive, which is generally considered a good species trait over-all.
Unlike other dratini, these variants do not seem to like up close and personal battle. They have displayed no interest in using their bodies as a weapon until well past the time of normal evolution. Instead, the youngest brutally attack with their thundershocks. As they grow older, the dratini naturally aquire moves that allow them to survive thundershocks with more certainty. It appears that this breed has learned how to manipulate the minerals natural to the rocky shore of outpost island where they live.
Margin Note: Do they need these minerals to surive? Perhaps I should ask one if he wants to come up on dry land for a bit.
Follow-up: Tried it and my advice to all other trainers is DON'T DO IT! Salt Dratini shrivel up without an appropriate source of water. I barely got my volunteer (Isagani) back into the sea in time. Next Question: Will the same happen in fresh water without the mineral source and salt content?
Follow-up: No, but Isagani complained of being hungry. I think the dratini litterally feed on the minerals. Probably by absorbtion through the skin, as well as ingestion. I put Isagani back in the sea, despite his protests that he would like to continue with the experiement
Further note: I'm beginning to wonder if the wonderfully friendly and co-operative Isagani has a death wish...
By manipulating the minerals in the enviornment the dratini can create a harder, protective skin, or even call up a mud sport. As they continue to grow this odd ability becomes more and more powerful. I have seen dratini, who skipped evolution, use rock tomb, and even ancient power.
I believe that while it is obvious that the land enviorment is dangerous for them these little dragons have evolved this way for a reason that's cynically benificial for the whole species. If dratini die when exposed to the open air this means that most trainers will stop wanting to catch them, as it is useless to have a pokemon that can't battle in 85% of all battle arenas. This will lead to a decrease in captures, and perhaps this new species will keep dratini from going as extinct as the fossils, as no species can survive breeding in captivity for long. Perhaps if left in the wild these popular creatures can put a stop to the decline in dragons due to the over useage from aspiring Dragon masters.
