It was probably just a little bit after lunch time when Raoul arrived at Jenta Laboratory. In truth, he'd been in the vicinity for a good twenty minutes by this point, but from what little he knew of places such as this, those in charge wouldn't appreciate being disturbed during their lunch hour. And if Raoul had any intention of getting a free Pokemon, then it would really be in his best interests not to anger the people in charge.
It had actually taken him several days of travelling to reach this point; he'd left home three days previously, taking with him only the clothes he was wearing, a backpack that had been handed down from at least one of his older brothers, and several changes of clothing. Without any money to speak of, he'd been restricted to sleeping outside at night, and that entailed a certain risk of being rained on. So far, he'd been fortunate, but it didn't exactly do any harm to be prepared, did it?
The reason he didn't have any money was, of course, the fact that his family didn't have any to give him. His mother had made him several days worth of sandwiches, but seeing as all the stories pointed to the fact that the Jentan League liked to give newly starting trainers some money to get themselves started with, there really was no need for Raoul's family to give him any. It was still somewhat embarrassing, turning up at the Labs without hardly anything to his name. Was it really any surprise that Raoul so strongly desired a way to change all that?
He was ready to work for it, too. He'd journeyed all this way on foot, for starters, and that had been much harder than he'd anticipated. He was pretty tired, it had to be said. He looked it, too, but only insofar as he seemed somewhat less energetic than one might expect a new trainer to be. But he still seemed cheerful and alert enough, and apparently determined to continue his journey, once he'd acquired his first Pokemon. The harder he worked, the more stamina he'd build up, right? This would stop being so tiring after a while, as long as he persevered.
And before this journey, he'd never realised how the ground just seemed to sprout rocks when he was trying to sleep on it. He had visions of being followed by a mischievous Geodude, which deliberately burrowed through the ground to come up beneath him while he was sleeping. Could Geodudes even do that? He wasn't sure, and he shuddered to even think of it. Geodudes were creepy and weird, anyway.
Putting that particular thought out of his head, Raoul went up to the main entrance of the Laboratory, and cast his eye over the list of available Pokemon. It was somewhat more extensive than he had anticipated, but he noted rather happily that there were several on the list that he liked the look of. That was a promising sign, he hoped. And there was some information there, too, about the three groupings of Pokemon. Did that mean he'd get not one, but three free Pokemon? That was what the information seemed to suggest. He'd have to double check that.
Feeling suitably resolved, Raoul knocked on the door and then stepped back a couple of feet, awaiting a response.
