The sun shown a bright orange against the sky, steadily sinking behind unknown mountains in the distance. Oak trees lined the small dirt path Pascal walked along, his shadow melding with those of the wooden pillars around him. It was truly the perfect time of day for him. Not too hot, nor too cold, and the sunset was always breathtaking. Could there have been a better time to start?
As the building Pascal suspected for a lab came into view, the teen about collapsed with anticipation. He had already been as nervous as he ever had in his life, but now his legs were like jello, and found himself near unable to walk. Maybe Pascal's apprehensiveness was rooted from the fact that he still hadn't decided on his starter. Every Pokemon on the list had been equally enticing, and he just couldn't bring himself to choose only one.
"Ugh! It's so hard...there's that Igglybuff, and the Ratatta, and the Piplup and Drifloon, too..", Pascal sighed, stopping to look down at the ground. It wasn't as if he was pressured into deciding right at this very moment, but he had to make his decision soon. Pascal doubted that the Professor would wait all day for his decision. He had other trainers to tend to, so what made this particular one special?
Kicking at the ground below, dust flew up from under Pascal's heel, and at that moment he knew which one he wanted. His mood brighter the hopeful walked briskly to the lab, dreams of his soon-to-be friend in his head. Pascal's lips curved into a smile, and his previous speed walk turned into a jog. Soon the jog gave way to a slow run, a weak breeze blowing his bangs from his face, an unseen eagerness in his eyes. Unhappy with his pace once again, Pascal began to sprint, the building getting closer and closer.
Almost there...I've never been so excited!
It was in this moment of bliss, during this rush of adrenaline, that Pascal fell. Catching his right foot on a rock, the teen feel flat on his face. Groaning quietly, he rose, the door mere feet from where he lay. Pascal had wanted to get to the door fast, and his fall was a quick one. Quick and painful, in his opinion.
"Only me...", Pascal whispered, rising and brushing off the dirt that had settled itself on his clothes. Satisfied with the job he had done, he rose his right hand, rapping at the door three times. Mentally chastising himself, Pascal waited for the Professor to answer the door.
Won't he be disappointed...

Professor Cherry looked up from his word document on DNA transition and evolution. Trainers usually came early in the day, excited to be off on big adventures. "It is eight fifteen, right?" he asked the ekans coiled in the broken down armchair near the pokeball shelf.
One of the purple reptiles raised his head, and glanced at the clock. <Eight-sixteen, but yes, it is.>
"Who would be here at this hour, then?" the professor muttered, getting up and shuffling over to the door. His lab was so far in the middle of nowhere that he didn't have neighbors looking to borrow a cup of sugar, after all. He hoped someone's car hadn't broken down. That was always unfortunate.
Opening the door, his expression grew even more perplexed under his mop of bushy white hair, when he saw a young teen standing there looking slightly contrite.
"Um, hello? Is something wrong?" Professor Cherry inquired.

Blankly staring at the door, Pascal thought he finally heard footsteps. He believed the Professor to be pretty old, as it took awhile for a response, and the steps were pretty slow. Making sure that he looked well enough to meet a Pokemon expert, Pascal watched as the door opened, a less than professional-looking man standing in the doorway. Maybe the would-be trainer was the disappointed one.
"Huh? Oh, yeah, of course.", Pascal muttered, replacing his previous melancholy with a smile and a wave, "I'm here to begin my journey as a Pokemon trainer!" At that moment a unnerving thought crossed his mind. "Uh, you are the Professor, right? Don't tell me i walked two miles to the wrong place...ergh, stupid sense of direction...", he questioned, his voice a hushed whisper as he once more reprimanded himself. Perking up once again, Pascal averted his gaze from the elderly man to the ground below.
If he is the Professor, would he actually trust me with a Pokemon....well...three...
Looking down at his watch nonchalantly, Pascal noted the time. It was 8:15 by his digital device, and it was never wrong. He really how rude it must have been to barge in on this old man. Even if he was the Professor, a person of his age would want their rest. Pascal wondered if he had woken him up.
He seems nice....he wouldn't pull out a shotgun or something, would he? Maybe he has a really big Pokemon. Maybe I should just start walking away, and then throw a big rock at his head so he couldn't give chase. That's a major crime, hurting an elderly person, though....
((Wow...he's all the fun of being self-conscious and uncertain rolled up into one package.))

((Haru: Yes, I am a humongous pokemon. Ph3ar my ekans-y wrath!!! Hana: Go to sleep. Haru: Yes dear. <slithers away>)) "Ohhh!" Professor Cherry said in understanding. "I'm sorry. Do come in, I am Professor Cherry -- so you did come to the right place. Sorry, I'm used to trainers whose parents don't let them stay out so late. Do come in. Do you have any idea which pokemon you would like for your group one starter? Or any preference as to personality or gender?" He stood aside to reveal the front half of the lab, and it's mess of tables, chairs, bookshelves, boxes, posters (mainly depicting the offered starters, although a few posters advertising genetics conventions also adorned the walls) and teetering piles of paper. Any flat surface above ground level seemed to be storage space, even if it hadn't been initially designed to be. However, the floor itself was fairly clear. The reason for this was the two coiled ekans in the chair. Professor Cherry liked the reptiles, however, he didn't want to accidentally step on one as it laired under fallen laundry, or a fortress of books. Besides, the clean wooden floors were easier for Haru and Han to negotiate when they needed to get something fast.

((Heh. Couple dynamics. I like their names. Blossom and Born In The Spring. What a pair.))
"Oh, my parent's aren't around here anywhere", Pascal sighed, for the first time realizing how far he was from home. With his excitement, the teen hadn't had time to consider home sickness. "They sent me here, sure that I could make it on my own. That's trust for ya.", he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. Best not to dwell on anything negative when you're about to receive your first three pokemon. Pascal nodded his head to the Professor, stepping into the lab.
Looking around, he found himself in amazement. While there was some clutter here and there, there were countless books, boxes of who-knows-what, posters of fierce and cute pokemon alike, and all the paper work. Pascal was sure at that point that he really was an important man, and a pokemon genius at that. Every genius was said to be a little messy. This particular one must be truly intelligent.
"Well, I was thinking about a Drifloon. It's both a Flying and Ghost-type, if my research payed off, and I think that suits my personality. As for gender, I really don't have a preference. For personality, I just want something simple; a calm, quiet, slightly sarcastic pokemon, that is more intelligent than the average creature, with a big heart as well. That was a tad more than simple, wasn't it?", Pascal replied, not pausing to breathe once. Saying a lot in a short time was just one of his many talents. He had always been a fast talker, even at a young age. Reminiscing, Pascal noticed the pair of ekans in the chair. He had seen one back in his hometown before, if memory served him right. It was a rare sight to find an ekans in Mossdeep City, and the one Pascal found had been as kind as any pokemon he had every seen. It seemed that every little thing reminded him of home.
"Those ekans. Their skins are beautiful. May I pet them?", Pascal commented, his question showing his eagerness. When considering the starter pokemon, the ekans had been an early choice, but he had decided against it, something drawing him toward the Drifloon and Piplup instead. Looking at the two, well one, magnificent specimen in front of him, he wondered if his choice had been the right one.
The one looks very.....bitter...

"Drifloon it is," the professor rubbed his hands together, glad that the choice was so easy. It was fun guessing what indecisive trainers wanted, but the results tended to be better when trainers knew exactly what they were after.
He turned to his computer to begin starter generation -- after having closed down the paper he was writing. Hearing Pascal's question about the snakes he waved his hand distractedly. "Ask them, if you like."
Hana, always pleased to have someone comment on her shiny scales had raised her head expectantly.
<Why, of course, you may pet us,> she told the dark haired human, poking Haru with her tail. He was just as eager, but slightly more proud than Hana, muttering something about not being part of a petting zoo.
Meanwhile the professor hurried over to a bookshelf full of pokeballs, not books, and picked out one pokeball with a shimmery orb and a feather etched into the hard red top. Placing this on the central table, he glanced at the computer, and hurried into a back room. He quickly returned, with two more pokeballs in hand. One had been etched with an all seeing eye, the universal symbol of psychic types, and the triangular edges of the steel symbol. The second bore a simple flame for a fire type.
He placed the two pokeballs next to the third, and then pointed at the ghost/flying pokeball. "This is, obviously, your group one starter, drifloon. She's a little odd -- and hopefully will be a good partner for you. Your group two starter is a ponyta. He is a little old fashioned, but quite intelligent. Finally, your group three starter," he tapped the steel/psychic pokeball, "is a beldum. It's a little awkward, so be patient when training it."
He walked away from the table, and took up a station near a poster by the door. It, unlike the rest of the posters dotting the walls, was a map of the Jenta region. He pointed at the large green dot in the center, with route radiating out from it in squiggly lines to form a sort of pyramid. "When you leave the lab, you do have an option of three different routes to take," Professor Cherry told Pascal. "Do you already have a good idea about where you would like to go, or would you like a suggestion or two from me -- and the ekans, of course?"
~~~
((Okay, copy and paste-y for the profile, time. Don't forget to keep the levels and attacks updated))
Group One: Drifloon Gender: female Level: 5 Group: 1 Nickname: you choose Ability: Aftermath: if knocked out by a physical attack, opponent receives damage Attacks: Constrict, Minimize Personality: She's very quiet at first. However, once she gets comfortable with someone she can be quite sarcastic. Mainly she does this to get a laugh at someone's expense, but also just because she believes that being friends with someone should mean that you have to be able to weather quite a bit of attitude. However, once past the sarcasm and shyness, she can be a really great person with a warm heart.
Group Two Ponyta Gender: Male Name: ? ? ? Level: 25 Attacks: Stomp, Ember, Tail Whip, Quick Attack Special Ability: Flash Fire - When hit by a fire attack this pokemon regains health Personality: He's rather old fasioned with his outlook on life, which makes him seem a little quirky at times, and a little bigoted at others. For example, he doesn't approve of trainers who use water pokemon as well as fire pokemon -- but since he thinks people are far too rude these days, he disapproves of it politely.
Group Three Beldum Gender: n/a Name: ? ? ? Level: 45 Attacks: Take Down Speacial Ability: Clear Body - Stats cannot be reduced Personality: This psychic-type day dreams quite a lot, and has a very active imagination. However, unfortunately, he will do this while floating along, and the results usually end up with him crashing into the side of a building, or a cliff face, or doing something equally awkward and embarrassing.
((OMG! (excuse that...) I love them all! It's like three separate parts of me. That Ponyta will have to allow a Water-type along with himself. *rolls up newspaper*))
Happier than he had expected, Pascal practically skipped over to the snake pokemon, smiling at Hana. She reminded him very much of the ekans he had run into before. Maybe it was just a species thing. Deciding petting was better thinking, in this instance, the boy held out a hand to rest on Hana. If the other was her spouse, Pascal hoped he wasn't the jealous type.
"Why, thank you.", he replied, bending down slightly to match the height of the chair before him, "I'm Pascal, as you might have heard. What might your names be?". The teen decided that if they were Snakey and Snakette, he would walk out at this very moment. Pascal trusted that the Professor had chosen suitable names, though, even if he was a man of science.
He doesn't seem too by the book, though.
As the Professor made his way to one of the bookshelves, Pascal shook in anticipation, an action he was sure would receive a weird look from the ekans. Glad to know that his was about to get his first pokemon, the trainer's heart dropped as the pokemon expert disappeared into the backroom. Now, it was up to the Professor what other pokemon he would call his own. As the Professor returned, Pascal shot up out of his crouched position, rushing over to where the the pokeballs lay.
There's the Drifloon, of course. He got it first. The other two, an eye with a triangular shard behind it, and a flame. I'm looking at a Psychic and Fire-type, then? Wonder what the triangle is..?
"She sounds perfect.", Pascal replied, ignoring the fact that the Professor referred to an odd pokemon being the best partner for him, "a Ponyta and a Beldum....they sound great, Professor. They should all make for quite a journey..". Chuckling quietly as he finished his statement, Pascal extended his hand to take hold of the Drifloon's pokeball, bringing the sphere up to his catch in a hug of sorts. He then placed the ball on his belt, doing the same with the other two.
Scurrying over to the Professor at his map, Pascal studied the map. The geography of Jenta was one thing he had failed to go over. The starter pokemon and the group system had been simple enough, but he pushed the map stuff to the side. It was a bad choice, it seemed, and his poor sense of direction would only hinder his travels. Looking to the Professor like a god (not literally), Pascal considered the different routes.
"Hmm, I hadn't really given the subject much thought", he sighed, stroking his chin habitually, "What would your recommendation be....?...and, the ekans of course..." Before pretending to study the map further, Pascal turned to smile at the snakes, hoping their input would be as helpful as the Professor's.
((Er...I have a question: Does the Drifloon walk, or hover? Another question: How small does Minimize make her?))
((Answers: 1 - Drifloon hover, like self regulating helium balloons. After looking at those string things, they obviously are not made for walking unless in extreme circumstance 2 - Minimize makes her progressively smaller. At first she would probably decrease to little less than head size, but could conceivably go all the way down to a golf ball. Was that helpful?
As for the personalities, we aim to please with personalities. It was actually fairly easy in your case, as you're obviously an experienced writer/RPer who can take anything that is thrown at you, which allowed me to tune into the more adventurous personalities, rather than the more formulaic test-the-water personality types.))
<I am Haru,> the ekans that he was not stroking filicked a pink forked tongue at him lazily. <This pretty silly thing is Hana.>
Hana's tail rapped him on the nose as she kept her head still under Pascal's fingers. <I shall chose to ignore everything you said after the word "pretty,"> she told him with dignity.
<Well, you are that, too, I suppose,> Haru smirked, before the Professor whirled back into the room. The male ekans uncoiled slightly, looking more awake. <Now this is the fun part. What do you think, Florak or Sapphire?>
<After the way Arisa chewed him out last week for sending her a green trainer who thought that ground types were the way to go against an ice type gym? Definitely Florak,> Hana stated firmly. <Jenta's trainers aren't having much luck against the resident ice sculpture.>
"Well," Professor Cherry said, his fingers tracing a route that meandered haphazardly through cliff forest and plain without any seeming consideration for anyone who might wish to travel in a straight line, or arrive at places in a timely manner, "I believe that with your group two starter it might be wisest to start off on Route Three. It is one of the most -- confused routes of Jenta, and far more subject to geographic changes. However, it leads to Florak City's grass type gym with plenty of opportunities to catch useful flying type and poison resistant pokemon along the way. It would be one of your easier gym battles if you built a team around your ponyta, which knows some very strong attacks in any case."
"Alternately you might want to choose Route One, since you drifloon does have a slight advantage against Arisa's strongest pokemon, her Jynx. However, I think that a lot of training would be needed for your group one starter to be able to ignore the TM attacks that Arisa has packed all three of her pokemon with. A lot of trainers have been reporting problems with her seel's surf attack, and Xi-Xi's ice beam will knock a flying type down in a few shots if you are unlucky," Professor Cherry warned. "If you choose Route One you will definitely need to train in the Other Areas of Jenta -- even possibly send your drifloon to Outer Island. This is not only to raise levels, but also to find pokemon that are not debilitatingly weak when it comes to water, ice, and psychic type attacks."
Professor Cherry began to point to indistinct areas of the map. "The Altering Mansion is usually a good place to head for. It often has very rare and useful pokemon inside. It's a rather odd building in the fact that it will find you more often than you find it. The Underground Maze of Jenta has openings all around here, and it is possible to catch mawile there, which are very useful against Arisa. Finally, the abras of Jenta are always willing to teleport people to their home in the Sankaku grasslands. You can explore the town, or even battle in the Colosseum on this tiny island."
Just beyond the blobby island on the map that Professor Cherry was pointing at was another small out cropping with the label "Outer Island." It was almost off the map. Underneath the label was a small note "Pokemon Only."
"Anyway, I think those are your best two options," Professor Cherry continued. "Route Five leads to Bahati's steel type gym. I think it would be tough to build a team around your group three beldum. It wouldn't be impossible, but I think that you would prefer to go to the move relearner after your starter becomes fully evolved, and that costs a bit of pyen, so you might want to save up."
<Speaking of pyen,> Hana hissed reprovingly from under Pascal's thumb. <I believe you've forgotten several things, Professor.>
"Oh gosh!" the professor went white, and quickly rushed around to various boxes. Professor Cherry had two speeds, whirlwind fast and ancient shuffle. Right now he was in whirlwind mode, and dumped the appropriate items next to Pascal's pokeballs. "Let's see, that's 5000 pyen from the Jentan League. These are your five complementary pokeballs. Here we have your berry pouch. Finally pokedex -- oh dear! What color would you like?" the Professor asked as he peered into a box in confusion. "We have tangerine, pistachio, azure, teal, gray, and I think one red one left."
((Um...ahem, yes well...I was only testing you..yes. Golf ball. That makes me laugh for some odd reason. Thanks!
And please you did. Thanks....again!))
Turning back to hear the snakes' comments, Pascal allowed himself chuckle, so as not to interrupt the Professor's explanation that was he was sure would begin soon. Hoping the man wasn't one for lecturing, Pascal listened patiently as the many different roads he could travel were weighed. His judgment outweighing his excitement, the trainer decided that the simplest route would be the best for now. Pascal still had never tasted battle, and victory sounded a deal greater than defeat. He was a sore loser, anyhow.
Well, I've never been partial to Fire-types, but, the Ponyta sounds like an interesting character. I don't want to send my Drifloon out on her own just yet, either. She'd be lonely, I'm sure. Hmm...Florak City, it is!
"Well, as much as I'd like to play the hero and overcome great obstacles, I'm thinking a trip to Florak City is in order.", Pascal commented, studying the map as he previously had. The region seemed so vast to him. The teen wondered how he could ever hope to traverse the whole of Jenta. It was all very intimidating, but he had a great team.
Nothing to worry about...
"Forgotten.....something?", Pascal managed to get out, before a blur of white zipped past him, nearly knocking the trainer over. The Professor was frantic is his gathering of items, the boy thought, rushing from package to package. Frightened, Pascal removed himself from the old man's path, backing up against the chair holding Hana and Haru. "He's scaring me...", Pascal bent down to whisper, hoping the ekans would provide some sort of explanation. Or, maybe an injection.
Peering at the items from his spot by the chair, Pascal found that the man's running had at least come to a stop. Shuffling over to the table, the teen inspected each item, placing it in an appropriate place in his bag. Taking the pyen last, Pascal decided against biting into one of the coins. It wasn't that he believed it to be fake, rather that the whole coin biting bit was something he had the desire to try once. Picking up the pokeballs in turn, Pascal placed them in his bag, their hollow interiors required no hug.
They're only pokemon berries, I'm sure.
Sighing quietly, the trainer hefted the bag, trying to judge the number of berries. It was a good supply, he believed. Dropping it into his bag next to the pokeballs, Pascal turned to the frenzied Professor. He was now asking him about a pokedex color. Pistachio sounded about right.
"Pistachio sounds nice.", Pascal chirped, wondering what it the machine itself would be like. He'd only ever seen a pokedex once or twice, wayward trainers passing by with them in tow back in Mossdeep. Pascal wondered what the Jentan ones looked like.
((I'm assuming--hoping that that 5000 pyen is made up of coins. Or, at least some coins.))
((The berry bags are magic berry bags ^^. They always contain the exact amount and variety of berries that you might need. It would be nice for realism, though, if Pascal occasionally found berries on the ground.
And the money can be partly in coins, or whatever you like. We usually pretend it is in bill form to carry more easily.))
Professor Cherry picked up the well saturated green metal rectangle. It had a two thin black lines around the middle, one horizontal and one vertical. The line that split the rectangle into right and left sides had a glassy black orb bisecting it.
"That will activate your pokedex as soon as it sees a new pokemon or you wave your hand over it. The pokedex is designed like a cell phone in certain ways. The top splits in half and opens to reveal the screen, and the various buttons," Professor Cherry explained.
"Well, there you go. I think that you're ready to head out on Route three."
((Magical and realistic?! Oh boy! A nerd's dream. *realized that I said "Took the money last", then took it first and just threw it in the bag. Heh.))
Taking the device, Pascal admired the unique shade of green. It had been a difficult choice when he heard the Professor had both pistachio and tangerine, the teen preferring both the fruit and the nut. Green had never steered him wrong before, so why let it down? Listening to the old man's description, Pascal observed the pokedex carefully, realizing what a powerful piece of technology he held.
Waving his hand over the shiny black orb, Pascal beamed as the device beeped and came to life. The top half of the pokedex flipped open, revealing an untouched screen and colorful buttons. Closing the device, Pascal slipped it into his bag, turning to Professor Cherry thankfully. Within a matter of minutes, this man had given him all he thought he'd ever need. Pascal felt he should repay him, even if it was just his job.
"Thank you so much, Professor. When I conquer this region, I'll have you to thank. Uh...I don't really mean conquer...but, I'm sure you get the picture.", Pascal chirped, turning on his heel and walking into the the life he had previously dreamt of, stopping at the door, "Goodbye to you too, Hana and Haru." A sudden pep in his step, the trainer found himself maintaining a pace that most would think inhuman. After all, pokemon wait for no man.
