((The title says "Steady as she goes". I can pay homage to The Raconteurs in French even. Yay.))
The Professor's lab far back in the distance, Pascal found the night sky steadily forming above him. Realizing that he had spent more time than planned with the old man, the trainer had picked up his pace, hoping to reach Route Three earlier than sunset. So, life showing a sense of humor, allowed him to set his sights the Route Three marker just as the sun fell behind the mountains. It had been either laughter or tears, and Pascal was cackling like a mad man. Passing the small sign, the trainer let his laughter die down to a mere chuckle, taking a seat against a large oak.
"Time to meet the crew...", he exhaled, taking the three pokeballs that held his starters from their places at his belt. Enlarging them one at a time, Pascal weakly tossed them in front of himself, their figures almost majestic. Shy, yet hovering with a hidden eloquence, the Drifloon was a pleasant little mauve balloon. Proud and majestic, flames lapping at the air, stood the Ponyta. Bulky and dense, the Beldum floated in the air, Pascal unable to tell its expression. Maybe that was because the pokemon was facing away from him.
I wonder if all exchanges are final...?
"Hello...and...uh..nice to meet you", Pascal greeted uneasily, standing up, his confidence building, "I am your trainer, Pascal Fasch."
<....Pascal? Weird name for a weird kid, I guess...>, the Drifloon whispered, her trainer just barely making out her comment.
<Nice to make your acquaintance, Pascal>, the Ponyta replied, bowing on its front legs elegantly.
<Beldum is better! Beldum is better! Bet-TER!>, the finger-like pokemon declared, zipping wildly around his teammates.
"Hey, I like my name....", he snapped back, nodding to the flaming horse out of respect, "Now, now...you're all...........spe-cial....?" Pascal watched in both amazement and disappointment as the Beldum repeatedly slammed into a tree.
<Give me your tasty treasures! Give them! They are mine....oh...bright sky gems...>, the Beldum screamed, before looking up to see the stars in the sky. Night had taken no time to make itself known. If only it had been as slow as the mind of his Beldum. Such a shame...
<The stars are too bright for someone as dim as you>, the Drifloon growled, her voice raised this time. Floating over her truly dim ally to obscure its view of the sky, the balloon pokemon laughed wildly, expanding and releasing her air in turn. The rise and fall was more sporadic than it might normally be, her happiness distracting her.
<No, she stole the sky gems!!! Make her stop, Fascal Pasch!>, the Beldum cried messing up its trainer's name, and floating to tackle Pascal over. He believed it to be a hug from the Beldum. The pokemon, now situated on Pascal's chest, looked up at the sky to the gems back, he began to hover aimlessly around the area. At least that was done.
<So, trainer...what names have you chosen for us?>, the Ponyta asked, having ignored the fight between the other two entirely. It was a gift you could say. As the horse pokemon stated his question, Pascal found five eyes fixed on him.
"Uh...well...your name is Charlie...", Pascal answered, pointing to the Ponyta, "and...you're Nechele...and...you're...Dol-". Cut short as the Beldum flew away, the trainer tossed around the idea of jumping from one of the taller trees. "Ugh, Doldrum, come back!", he commanded, sprinting after the hovering 'genius'.
<Hmm...Nechele....I like it. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?>, Nechele commented, Charlie nodding in agreement as Pascal continued to chase after Doldrum.
<The brave warrior Doldrum marches off to war! To war! To-->, the dense pokemon began, before Pascal pounced on it, bringing Doldrum to the ground. <Why are you hurting me? Are you an evil trainer?! Evil, evil, EVIL TRAINER!>, Doldrum screeched, Pascal holding its pokeball in his hand.
"Power hug! Back into the pokeball!", he gasped, a beam of red light enveloping the Psychic-type. Turning to glare at Nechele, he sighed, "You'll have to go back, as well." Returning the Drifloon to her ball before a protest could be voiced, Pascal sat beside Charlie, who laid down on the grass below. Laying his head on the horse's body, the trainer sighed, glad to have the other two in on his belt once more.
<It'll be fine. They're both good pokemon, I'm sure. You have me, too.>, Charlie reassured him, Pascal lowering his eyelids sleepily. Curling his fiery tail around the trainer's waist, it was as if he comforted Nechele and Doldrum, as well. The Ponyta was sure it would be a long journey, but he had faith in Pascal. The old man would never give the teen a pokemon like Doldrum or himself if he felt that he wasn't prepared. Staring up at the starry sky above, Charlie shared the Beldum's fascination with the stars lighting the blackness. Tail still blanketing Pascal, the Ponyta feel asleep, dreams of the stars his trainer would someday reach filling his head.
((Awww...a boy and his flaming horse....))

Suddenly, a pidgeotto swooped low, thinking Pascal's head was something to eat.
Then, of course, she realized otherwise. Offended that something so mundane as a trainer on his ponyta would be in her way, she found a place to land on a nearby tree, and cleared her throat.
If she was going to have to deal with a dirty human and a fiery equestrian thing, she'd do it when they were awake and paying attention to her.
"<A-a-a-hem,>" she began in a high-pitched, proper sort of voice. "<I would very much appreciate it if you would kindly pay attention to your surroundings, young man.>" Her glare turned haughty, and she preened her feathers. Obviously, her rather normal (for the route's airborn flying folk) upbringing was much better than the boy's substandard, biped one. "<Are all the new trainers this rude? I say! How disappointing...what are the humans doing, these days?>"

Totally oblivious to the pidgeotto's dive, Pascal slept on, as did Charlie by him. Realization of a visitor was not even clear to the trainer until after the throat clearing, which had caused the teen to open his eyes a tad. The ponyta had done the same, obviously sensing the boy's stirring, even without any major movement. Of course, Charlie did have his tail draped across his trainer.
"Oh...I'm...sorry", yawned Pascal, clearly worn out. If he had slept for hours or minutes, the teen didn't know, but sure didn't feel rested. The trainer turned to wake his pokemon, only to see that Charlie was already rising to his feet.
<Oh yes, that is a fine point, mistress of the sky, but...something bothers me?>, Charlie began, his voice laced with respect, yet a detectable edge. <Why would someone lying on the ground affect a beautiful bird such as yourself who can easily fly over us? Just a thought...really>.
"Well, he has a point...uh...", the trainer commented, before realizing he had no idea what pokemon he was speaking with. Searching his bag for the pleasant green device, Pascal found that it must have gotten buried under everything else. His luck, it seemed. Giving up hope, his head shot up, a confused look directed at the pidgeotto. Finding his words, Pascal replied, "Umm...I really wasn't trying to be ru--"
<--Pascal, you have done nothing wrong. It is this feathery miss that is rude. Waking us up from a small, harmless nap, to tell us that we should...well....her comment really doesn't seem to have a very serious motive. How exactly was Mr. Fasch rude, may I ask?>, Charlie interrupted, trying to remain as calm as possible. Such a hot-tempered pidgeotto in the ponyta's opinion. Her head wasn't in the right place, it seemed.
I doubt she'll take that well...

She really didn't.
Ruffling her feathers, she glared beakily down at the ponyta. "<Young man, I assure you that while I could have flown over you, it's the principle of the matter. You were in my way, and weren't looking where you were going. I require space to fly, as do all the feathered Pokemon of this world. You were, of course, taking up space that should have been mine to fly in. Honestly, what do they teach you at that infernal laboratory? Please do learn some manners, young man,>" she ordered in her shrill voice, then turned to Pascal.
"<Well?>" she asked, clearly very irritated. "<Aren't you going to reprimand your ponyta? He has been extremely rude to me just now, and it's all simply vexing.>"

Pascal, shaking his head and exhaling deeply, allowed himself to fall to the ground. Sitting with his legs sprawled, the trainer developed a sudden fascination with his fingernails. He knew Charlie would have something to say. Pascal decided that he would only intervene if necessary. Pokemon could really be quite troublesome.
<Well...while I doubt you are old enough to call me 'young man'>, the ponyta replied, his compliment subtle, but there nonetheless, <I was not aware that you had such a great wingspan. Now, most pokemon could just ascend into the clouds, but as magnificent as you are--a queen of the sky, it seems-- it couldn't be possible. Also, I do apologize that we couldn't where we were going, as my tired trainer and I were resting our eyes.> Finishing, Charlie stood still as a statue, both calm and confident. A pidgeotto with any sense would reason with him, seeing that his argument was superior. Looking down to Pascal encouragingly, he craned his neck to the sky, putting this conversation below him. Charlie decided he would meet the feathery hag with her own attitude.
Realizing that he most interject, Pascal rose in an instant, resting a hand of his fiery steed. "I see no reason to scold Charlie. He has acted calmly and as kind as possible, put that apparently will not quell your desire to scold us for something so irrelevant as being on the ground...", Pascal began, standing as proud as the horse next to him, "which is far below you. I see no reason to continue this argument." Once finished, the teen moved back a few paces, looking to Charlie. Catching Pascal's gaze within his peripheral vision, the ponyta nodded his consent, his trainer obviously ready to battle. The ponyta was more than ready to silence the haughty old pidgeotto's mouth.

The pidgeotto sense that somehow in the pontya's speech she had been insulted. She ruffled her feathers, to make her appearance much more intimidating, while staring down her beak at the annoying training pair.
<Well, as I hear no apology, I am afraid I must exact one. Ill-fitting for one of my stature, however-->
She raised her great wings, and flapped them vigorously, sending dust swirling off the plain and into the air.

((I'm assuming that that was a sand attack?))
"Well, if that's how it has to be...", Pascal muttered, shaking his head to show his distaste for the situation, "Charlie, use...AHHH!" The trainer's command was abruptly cut off by the blinding cloud of dust that was so thoughtfully brought up by the pidgeotto's wings. The ponyta was equally affected by the bird's dusty gust, particles getting caught in his eyes. Both trainer and pokemon blinking vigorously, Pascal was the first to regain his sight.
"Charlie, use Quick Attack! If the dust gives you enough cover, you may be able to surprise her!", the teen commanded, Charlie responding by standing completely still. "Oh, right...you can't see...umm...", the teen reasoned, trying to come up with a way to communicate direction. "Barely turn to your right...and she's just five feet off the ground." Charlie responded by bursting at a tremendous speed through the dust that had not yet settled, his charging form heading straight for the haughty pidgeotto. Pascal figured his directions hadn't been the best, but that they were close enough.

The pidgeotto squawked in an undignified manner as the ponyta came barreling out of the sand attack. She had been pumping air with her wings in order to get the sand attack rolling. But that had left her hovering as a target, and the surprise of seeing her opponent come out of the dust cloud in the proper direction nearly floored the bird. Charlie's quick rush with his body certainly did, and left her rolling end over end in the dirt.
She rose, shaking dust from her feathers angrily, and then rushed at Charlie's retreating rear, in her own quick attack.
((Yay! Pascal! *does happy dance that you is back, and I is back, and we all is back!*))

Pascal fisted the air silently, equal parts surprised and proud, as the ponyta dashed from the rolling pidgeotto back to his trainer. However, the uppity bird was not one to stay down, obviously, as the trainer saw her feathery self flying back to slam into the flaming horse's backside. Is what at that time that Pascal wished that he had been fighting a pidgey, considering that the bird's evolution and his ponyta weighed abut the same. The quick attack came too...quick...to even speak, and sent Charlie skidding along the ground on his side.
"Charlie! You okay?!", Pascal shouted, clearly worried. He could normally handle himself a tad more calmly, but he had only just met the pokemon, and was still in the new trainer phase.
<I'm doing fine, Pascal. What next to take down this annoying avian?>, Charlie asked, shaking off the force of the bird's attack, and standing back up on four sturdy legs.
"Singe her wings with Ember!", Pascal commanded, the ponyta's fires flaring as four small balls of flame erupted from the horse's mouth, two heading for each wing. He was forced to shake off any ideas of a fiery tornado of death.
((*joins in happy dance* YAY!))

The pidgeotto had zipped over the fallen ponyta, only to bank sharply and turn as she heard that the horse had the gall to be alright after being attacked. The nerve of such a mammal. And then the horrible comment about singing her rather attractive plumage! It was indescribably rude!
<My goodness, you are all insufferable!> the pidgeotto yelled angrily. <As if anyone could singe my wi--ulp!>
She had been speeding up to hit the horse head on with a second quick attack, when the fire balls peppered her wings, forcing her to turn into the still billowing dust cloud of the sand attack at the last minute rather than let her feathers catch alight.

"Great job, Charlie!", Pascal called, watching the pidgeotto swerve into the cloud of dust she had previously kicked up, "Now, use Ember again! I know it's impossible to see, but try and spread out the fireballs so that there's a greater chance of hitting her." He realized that it wasn't the most accurate course of action, but he reasoned that it was wiser than rushing into a blinding cloud. If the fiery equine did that, he'd be at a disadvantage as well as the ill-tempered bird.
<I'm not entirely sure about this, but I'll give it a go.>, responded Charlie, before a handful of small fireballs burst from the ponyta's mouth, spreading out to hit different areas of the dust cloud. Thinking upon Pascal's choice in Ember, the flaming pokemon realized how brilliant it truly was (despite its lack of certainty), considering his possible actions. The child was already beginning to develop a "battle sense" of sorts.

The smoke cloud actually looked very pretty, flickering red, orange and yellow, as it was lit up from within, like frosted glass marble in the sunlight. To the pidgeotto inside the cloud, of course, things were not so pretty. The small burning round pelted through the obscuring veil. She dove under the first one with ease -- but the second almost clipped her already burning wing, and a third nearly took away her tail feathers. She pumped her wings for height -- and slammed smack! into a burning ball of pain that seemled to lidge in her chest. Every movement made the world swim and blacken. Then, with a thud, the bird met the ground.
Pascal's pokedex beeped cheerfully that Charlie had defeated a level 26 pidgeotto, and had gained 2 levels, putting him at level 27.
((A welcome back gift, and apology for having to wait for so long. ^^))

"Way to go!", Pascal encouraged, running over to pet Charlie. The ponyta merely whinnied cheerfully - with a hint of smugness - as the pair looked at the downed pidgeotto. "I know she was disagreeable, but a flying type would be a great help, seeing as Nechele isn't in the right level range for this route.", the teen explained to his pokemon, hoping that his point was a valid one. It was the truth. Having a bird's eye view in the palm of your hand was always convenient. Withdrawing a pokeball from his bag, Pascal drew back his arm, his throw interrupted by the beeping of his newly acquired pokedex.
"Hey...she was level twenty six. That brings you up to level twenty seven. Pretty impressive.", Pascal commented, congratulating the ponyta on a battle well fought.
<Did you truly expect any less from me, Pascal?>, Charlie answered, glancing up at the sphere held in his trainer's hand, <Do you plan on throwing it?>
Aiming carefully, Pascal let loose the pokeball, his arm swinging down in a horizontal arc. The predicted path was a quick one, low to the ground. Not everyone had time for dramatics.
((Yay! Thank you!))

((WARNING: It is possible not to be able to catch group two pokemon with pokeballs. you have a 75% chance of capture on route three, and on route 4 that drops to 50% for the group two pokemon and 25% for the group three pokemon. Wish for greant and or ultra balls at the wishing well, or buy some either at Nishihara, or when you reach Florak ^^. Anyway, the number generator says:
23! You've got a pidgeotto ^^))
The pokeball hit the pidgeotto, and rocked hard three times. The bing was loud on the clear night, and several heads poked up among the rocks and stones further up the cliff, fuzzy ears alert. With a swish and crunch of sand and pebbles a pale cream and brown colored pokemon came loping easily toward Pascal and his pokemon. Once it flowed over a large boulder and into the circle of light Charlie had created, it was clear that the pokemon was a furret.
<Hello. What are y'doing here?> the furret asked. <Heading along the Route, I suppose? Isn't it rather late? Are you hoping to catch an oddish? Where is your camping gear?>
Meanwhile Pascal's pokedex was beeping plaintively to alert the trainer to the flashing screen and pidgeotto stats:

((Gosh! I can't believe I'm posting here again! )) Walking proudly over to the still orb, Pascal picked it up with a new vigor. As he placed spherical container on his belt, the trainer breathed a sigh of relief. The seconds had ticked by waiting for the ball to stop its rocking, and now that it was full and in his hands, he could be at ease. Turning back to Charlie, the teen decided against returning the ponyta back to his pokeball. His choice was soon validated as an inquisitive pokemon scampered towards him. I think I know that pokemon....a furret, right?, Pascal lulled over in his mind, deciding against checking his pokedex. Whether he was right or not, it was a pride thing. "Hello there, little guy...", the boy greeted, crouching down to the ferret-like creature's level, "Aren't you a question-loving one? Well to answer all your queries, I guess it is late, an oddish would be nice, and I'm not exactly a seasoned outdoors man." Smiling brightly, Pascal returned to an erect position, nonchalantly adjusting his ebony hair. He was sure that this energetic Normal-type was looking for a battle. Or maybe he was just looking for an ear to chat off. <We must have aroused him by battling with that insufferable bird...>, Charlie commented, snorting as thoughts of the pidgeotto entered his mind. Scraping the ground aimlessly, the ponyta awaited Pascal's next move. The trainer in turn waited for the furry stranger.

((Ear to chat off, because that sounds so amusing, and because I'm interested in seeing if Charlie will snap or not.))
The furret purred, and wound his silky body around Pascal's legs, before beginning to follow his tail in a couple of circles. This brought him head first into Charlie's leg and hoof, which brought the ferretine pokemon up sharp. <Right. Um, just so you know, there aren't any oddish around here, any more. You can find gloom, though. They're all around the forest-y bits. See, the oddish mostly evolved, or moved away to the Mushroom Forest where they were more welcome. Fewer trainers beat up on them, y'know? 'Cause oddish were under leveled. And it wasn't nice for them.
<Gloom are calmer than oddish, actually. Oddish get all huffy if you step on them accidentally. Not that I blame them. I don't want people stepping on my head. But gloom are nice and calm. As long as you're up wind of them. Calm, but stinky, you know. I once met one, and everything was fine, and we were talking, but then the wind shifted, and I conked out. Really, it was like walking into a compost heap, and not the yummy kind of compost, either.> The Furret took a few seconds to ruminate on this, before he was off again.
<I like compost heaps, actually. They usually have some very yummy stuff in them. But not many people compost any more, y'know? It's all landfills these days, and I don't like venturing that far into cities. Not that they keep landfills in the cities, but it's still, you have to go through the city to get to the landfill, and that's not too fun.>

Pascal giggled playfully as the furret wound its way around his limbs, wondering if the pokemon was truly just looking for someone to talk to. As he watched the small creature zip around in a circle, the boy caught his breath when it ran into his flaming horse. The ponyta simply glanced down at the clumsy little guy, deciding to instead stare at Pascal, who merely observed the scene. His look fell somewhere between "Get him before I kill him" and "Get him before I kill you." As Charlie's trainer began to speak up, he quickly found himself covered up by the rambling furret.
"He's just energetic", Pascal whispered, stepping close to his ponyta, "and he probably wants someone to talk to."
<Then why doesn't he find someone else to talk to? I don't feel like dealing with this...child. The satisfaction of beating that bird wasn't enough to make up for her attitude....>, Charlie replied coldly, making sure only Pascal heard his voice. It wasn't exactly a difficult task to control his volume, considering the speed and focus the furret had when talking.
"C'mon....just give him a chance. Maybe he'd want a battle...if you're up to it....", the teen began, hopeful, "...or maybe he'll just follow us around." Sighing at the thought of having the pokemon as a tag along, Pascal tried to think on the bright side of things. "Well....he is....informative, right? And...well...he's very cheerful and has great ener--"
<Fine....I'll be nice. Trusty steed....right? Anyways, he hasn't messed up too greatly....>, Charlie interrupted, stamping his foot for emphasis. He would deal with the mongrel, despite the fact that he didn't apologize.
"That's good to know...about the glooms. What else can you tell us about the area?", Pascal said, turning to the furret with his biggest smile on. He was sure that he felt Charlie mentally kick him.

<Well, um,> the furret was brought up short in the middle of his rumination on compost, a subject in which he felt himself to be an expert. <There are a lot of clefairy around. Yes, they're supposed to be rare, but they're more common than a lot of other pokemon, because you can find them in all three areas. And they say something big is going to fall out of the sky at some point. The gods don't like this place, they say. Excpet for they don't say who the gods are. Or what they want to be called. Or how to leave offerings, or anything. You'd think gods would want offerings.
<Anyway, clefairy are pretty flighty, you know. And cleffa are cute. But they're too young to go outside much. So they can't be found on the route. And this route goes to Florak, and there are a lot of gym leaders who come here for conferences and stuff. And the normal type gym leader comes out to study the oddish with the grass type gym leader sometimes. And he saw a cleffa once, and he got all excited. Except for the grass leader said he couldn't catch a baby pokemon, and he agreed, and they continued walking. He said clefable are strong pokemon, and wipe the floor with the move psychic. And the grass leader agreed, but she said she still likes her part-poison types.
<And the normal gym leader comes her a lot, actually. He says it's very pretty on Vision Bridge. He invites the grass type leader to go there a lot, so she can tell him more about lombre. She doesn't talk a lot, so I don't know what good that would do. But maybe when she turns red she's actually saying something. Do humans turn colors like kecleon to communicate?> the furret's head tilted to one side as he rose onto his hind legs to get a better view of Pascal.

Pascal, becoming increasingly amazed at the amount of random information this furret was able to release, tried desperately to think of a way to escape the "helpful" (as tiring as it was informative) pokemon. His first thought was a battle but, despite the extreme annoyance he was facing, the trainer wasn't sure he could bring himself to knock out this cheery creature. Biting his lip, he turned to Charlie for help.
<...you think I have a better idea, Pascal?>, the ponyta replied, knowing exactly what his owner's look meant, <I'm at a loss. I say we simply we simply leave, but I'm sure you'd be again-->
"No. We can't just leave him...", Pascal interjected, it being his turn to interject now, "...besides, he's a good source of information. He could be useful as a guide of sorts....maybe.." Trying his best to incorporate the "puppy dog eyes" into his retort, he stared at Charlie with misty eyes. The ponyta was surprisingly weak to this emotional assault.
<Fine. Just don't ask me any favors for awhile...>, Charlie growled, pointing his snout to the sky and strutting a few yards away.
"Thank you.", Pascal whispered, before turning to the furret, smiling, "Well, that's all great to know. We were actually thinking about heading over to the cliffs and the rocky parts around here. Maybe you'd like to give us the grand tour?" The trainer glared over his should as he heard the horse exhale in protest, but quickly reverted to a welcoming upturn of his lips. As much as Charlie hated to admit it, neither of them knew this area, and the best thing they could do now was ask. The problem was, maybe this particular furret didn't know how to listen.
((I'm assuming we're currently near the rocky cliffs, considering we've encountered a pidgeotto and a furret, right? Also, what's the difference between the rocky area and the cliffs?))
|
|
|

((The cliffs are the rocky area. There are three environtments here: open/plains areas with lots of wheat and long grasses, woody areas, and the rocky cliffs areas. And the pidgeotto was a modding mistake, as you said you were in the plains when you entered the route. As it's up to you to describe the scenery that your character is currently occupying, you're the one who chooses what you're near, and what pokemon you encounter 8)))
<Sure, sure!> the furret said happily, running around Pascal's legs. He circled the human twice, and then set off in a direction that looked pretty good to him, through the waving grass. <So, right in front of you, if my nose is right -- and it always is -- you will smell another furret. She's female, walking along, probably heading for her burrow. She just ate some eggs, that's the yolk-y smell.
<And on your left, oooh! A clefairy was here a few nights ago. See how the grass has been trampled? She was probably dancing around. We had a full moon three days ago. Clefairy really come out, then. Funny, they usually group together to dance. She probably was practicing for the solstice. Clefairy can be very shy.
<And to your right, don't breathe in. There is some stun spore on the grass. The wind must have been blowing this way from the woods over there last night. Gloom can be a real annoyance that way. Their stuff gets all over everything. It's so dangerous.
