((I am new, but this site looked too cool to pass up. Literate Pokemon roleplays seem to be few and far between... Optimistically hoping for Jenta, here.))
Name: Raoul Allaway
Age: 13
Hair Color: Dark brown
Eye Color: Dark brown
Other Description: Raoul has this vaguely sad-puppy look to him. It's probably those liquid dark brown eyes, making him look distinctly more soulful than he actually is. Not that he's not soulful, as such, it's just that his appearance is somewhat misleading on that front. He's not especially attractive, and it's really his colouring that is appealing, rather than his actual facial features.
His skin's complexion tends to be on the dark side, as if he might have just a hint of Mediterranean ancestry in there somewhere. Spending time in the sun just makes him a little darker; he's quite lucky in that he tends to tan rather than burn. His hair tends towards the wind-tossed look, being rather random in style and often getting into his face.
For clothing, Raoul leans towards the generic and preferably cheap. His blue jeans are faded to the point where they look more of a pale bluish grey, and his white T-shirt is now of a remarkably similar hue, with the formerly black text "Why?" now reduced to a barely visible grey. It is likely that his brown leather jacket and boots would have faded too, if leather could actually fade; they still look pretty old, though.
He also has a backpack, and it was once a rather lurid green, but fortunately it now seems to be a much more pleasant washed out greeny-grey. One of the pockets has a large, tattered hole in it, and Raoul has to remember not to use that one, unless he wishes to lose whatever he put into it.
The only item he has with him that looks as if it might be new are his glasses; he can't really see much more than giant fuzzy blurs without them, so not having them was not really an option.
Personality: Raoul comes across as a rather placid individual, with quiet, unassuming mannerisms that disguise what is in fact a great deal of determination. When he speaks, it is with a quiet, soft voice that goes directly to the point; he doesn't really see the point of beating around the bush, or sugar-coating the truth. All in all, it's quite strange to hear such bluntness coming from someone who otherwise speaks so gently.
The thing with Raoul, though, is that due to his background, the life in which he grew up, he sees the world in a fairly unique way. He's absolutely convinced of the fact that if he wants something done, he has to do it himself, and that his own strength is the only thing on which he can rely.
It makes him rather untrusting, not of people themselves, but more of their ability to do the things they say they can. He can be perfectly amicable with someone, while privately having absolutely no faith in them at all.
And his distrust in their abilities doesn't really have any effect on his willingness to be their friend. And that's the thing about Raoul; once he's made a friend, he's a friend for life. He is naturally loyal, and his determination to rely solely on his own strength is often applied to the protection of his friends, too. He just doesn't really like anyone trying to protect him.
Raoul is, however, somewhat opportunistic, and at times has some rather questionable ethics. If he sees a way for himself to benefit, then he'll take it, unless the methods required would be far too immoral. He has no trouble breaking little rules, though. He would steal from someone who's rich, for example, or he would use information gained to his own advantage. But anything that would actually be wrong, he would absolutely refuse to do. Raoul has his standards, although sometimes it can be hard to see where he draws the line.
He tries had to be self-sufficient and independant. He'd love to one day find himself in a position where he doesn't have to rely on anyone but himself for anything. This would, unfortunately, require many more resources than he currently has to hand, but there's no denying that he's ambitious.
Finally, Raoul has some distinctly selective fears, particularly of Pokemon. The kinds of Pokemon that look too strange or alien, or even just too human looking, he finds creepy and disturbing. There doesn't, however, seem to be much of a pattern to the fear. He'd sit there quite happily with Bug Pokemon crawling all over him, but he'd go to an enormous effort to run away from or avoid a Machop or Geodude.
History: Raoul comes from a rather large family, and he's a middle child. The consequence of this is that very rarely were his achievements noticed, because one of his elder siblings had already done something better, but neither was he the beloved baby of the family, because his younger siblings were smaller and cuter. Always being in the middle like this has left him with a rather strong desire to be noticed, but he knows from experience that merely being louder and more obnoxious doesn't really help.
But always being on the receiving end of hand-me-down clothes, and never having been able to have his own bedroom left Raoul with a very powerful desire to have just those very same things. And it's the fact that he knows his parents can never provide him with those things that made him who he is today; the independent individual who feels that only through his own work can he get the things he desires.
And this was where Pokemon training came in; being a successful trainer was a sure fire way to gain both riches and fame. And so that was what Raoul decided to do. He doesn't harbour any illusions about being able to become a world famous champion overnight, or anything like that. He is something of a realist, after all. He knows that training is a lot of work, and he's ready for that. He's just determined to be good enough that it'll be enough to take him out of a poverty-filled life in everyone else's shadow.
Aside from anything else, rumour had it that starting out as a Pokemon trainer also came with some startup cash. And sleeping on hard, rocky ground while travelling is a definite improvement over a small bedroom shared with three brothers. As far as Raoul sees it, he doesn't have anywhere to go but up.
Favorite Pokemon: Both Raoul and I prefer Pokemon that are more like real-world animals, although there's a few exceptions. Generally, anything with roughly four to six legs and/or wings and not too bizarre looking is good.
Overall, I like the Kanto and Johto Pokemon better than the Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokemon, but again, there's a few exceptions.
A few specific examples (and ones that somewhat go against what I said above):
Raoul's favourite Pokemon:
Bulbasaur, Electryke, Slugma, Lapras, Onix, Dratini
My favourite Pokemon:
Caterpie, Sandshrew, Charmander, Pidgey, Growlithe
Plot Willingness: Yes! Plot me up! I'm okay with having my character's Pokemon stolen and/or changed, too.
RP Example: Write a standard post-length reply to this prompt: "Your character enters the Johto Laboratory with baited breath, about to choose their first Pokemon. However, Professor Elm doesn't appear to be there...but there are three unmarked Pokeballs on a desk. What to do?" You may answer this prompt as either the character that you wrote the application for, or invent a new random character for the purpose of the post.
Despite the fact that Professor Elm was rumoured to be friendly enough, and that the Laboratory itself was nothing to be afraid of, Raoul couldn't help but feel a little intimdidated by it. The door had been open and he'd stepped inside, noting quickly that there seemed to be no one else around.
Once inside, though, the complexity of the Laboratory was instantly apparent. There was a variety of equipment in the immediate vicinity, and some of it was beeping in what Raoul thought was a rather ominous manner. He resisted the temptation to press a few buttons, and instead ventured deeper into the Laboratory, towards a desk further towards the back.
As he drew closer, he saw three Pokeballs lined up next to each other on the desk. They were on the only part of the desk that wasn't currently buried beneath stacks and stacks of paperwork. Curious, Raoul went up to the desk and looked at the Pokeballs, before picking up the middle one. It wasn't like he was going to steal it or anything. He was just wondering which Pokemon the ball contained, if any.
He'd always wanted a Pokemon, but his family had always been too poor. Even if the option had been there to have a Pokemon for free, they'd never have had enough resources to look after it properly. But with three Pokeballs right here, unattended, it was sort of tempting... As long as they weren't too weird or freaky looking. His best friend's Pokemon had been a Baltoy, and that thing had been both disturbing in appearance and sinister in nature. Whenever it had looked at Raoul, it had looked like it wanted to kill him.
He put the Pokeball back down on the desk. Much as he really wanted to have a Pokemon of his own, and tempting as these ones were, sitting here all unattended as they were, it would have been wrong to take one without permission. Raoul stepped back away from the desk, turning his gaze to look towards the door in an almost expectant manner, awaiting Professor Elm's return.
