Rachel slings a bag over her shoulder, having just arrived in the Miteinjan region. She wasn't sure what was going to happen in this region, she had only just gotten there by boat from Kanto, and was ready for anything as she knocked on the lab door.

A sleepy young woman answered the door. It was sort of early in the morning, and fog had encased the village with its wet, white mess.
"Whad'ya want?" she asked, rubbing her bleary brown eyes. She had short, thick black hair, which fell in a messy bundle down past her chin - it didn't look as if she'd brushed it yet. Even her dark brown skin looked tired (if that was even possible). Other than that, she wore a grey sweatshirt over some jeans, and some sneakers that were probably not such a dark shade of grey when she bought them.
Behind her, the three geodude she had out (geodude were naturally diurnal, and they woke with the sun - unlike Agatha Kauri) eyed her with annoyance. Sure, the region wasn't a gold mine, but Kauri was backed by Nishihara of Jenta. She had money. So why hadn't they been fed yet?

"I'm here for a pokemon," Rachel says. "This is the place where you can get pokemon, right?"

The young woman yawned. "Mm-hmm," she mumbled, wiping the sleep off her eyes.
Behind her, one of the two female geodude growled. Her rocky stomach was empty!
"Inna min'," mumbled Kauri, trying to get a clear image of the teenager in front of her. "You need a Pokemon?" she asked with another yawn. "Come in. Sorry, they're not all awake yet. I hate those tourism boats, they always drop you guys off too early."
She brushed off her sweatshirt, eyeing the grumpy rock-types. "What sorta Pokemon d'you like? I know I have eight or so posted, but sometimes I can scrounge up another one."

Rachel glanced over the choices, and her face fell, there was hardly anything that interested her. "Uhh, any chance you could scrounge up one or two?" She asks sheepishly.

The professor shrugged, yawned, and walked over to a computer in the corner. The room was damp, and the geodude all gave the two female humans a few very dirty looks. They then proceded to insult the both of them in their natural language; however, thanks to the lack of airborne translators (and the fact that Kauri didn't have a mechanical one), made the rather harsh insults fall on deaf ears.
The young woman in insulting-question sat down, tapping a few keys. The internet connection was slow, so she took the chance to grab her cell phone. She dialed a number to get her answering machine, just to see if she had any messages about extra Pokemon available to her. While she was pressing the number to hear new messages, the computer reached her email inbox, so she began checking her voicemail and email at the same time.
"Okay," she began after a few minutes, staring back at Rachel with her dark brown eyes. "I've got a male koffing available from a friend who cleans sewers. He breeds poison-types, and he has this guy to add to your choices." She eyed Rachel, draping a sweatshirt-covered arm over her chair. "If you'd come later, you'd be in time for a shipmet of unwanted, violent 'reptiles' from Jenta and stuff," she explained, making air quotes around one of the words to show it meant something a little different. "But not right now. So that leaves some rude geodude, a couple shellder, a sunkern, a wurmple, a numel, and a koffing. Which'll it be?"

"You know, I think I might try a Wurmple," Rachel says, she was here to try new kinds of pokemon after all, it wouldn't hurt.
(Never really tried raising a Wurmple on a site.)

Kauri raised an eyebrow, giving the wurmple a quick glance. The insect did not appear at all happy to hear this - he hated little kids...along with most, if not all, living things.
"You sure about that? I only have one wurmple - one boy already has his eye on him, too - and he's not the nicest wurmple I've seen. He's sort of sour, and he insults you every chance he gets. The only chance of him ever respecting you - not liking, respecting - is if you prove to him that you're a serious intellectual." She sighed. "His favorite subject is life science and biology...if you want him to go with you, you'll have to ramble about it for a little while."
The wurmple just glared at Rachel, then spat a dirty comment out in his insect tounge. The other Pokemon who were in earshot had a variety of different reactions: some were shocked, some sniggered, and some just looked at the female humans to see what they would do.
Kauri rolled her eyes. "Sorry, the Pokemon I get are usually rejects from other regions, with good reason. Well, sometimes I get nice ones, but usually they're Pokemon that have been taken off the lists or just too unfit for their little kids. And, of course, I don't have much choice here, so I take what I can get." She shot a glare at the wurmple, which was matched with the same intensity. "You should have seen some of the bratty Pokemon I've gotten. Especially the ones that are rare - they expect to be treated like little kings and queens. Either that, or they're sorta violent."

"Okay, scrap the Wurmple then," Rachel says, shaking her head as she stops to think.
(I'm really starting to miss the old Jenta starters.)

Kauri yawned, and then checked her cell phone. "If you really can't decide, I can make you a deal." She grinned, showing some white teeth that almost glowed against her nearly black skin. "As you might be able to tell, this region doesn't make much money. Nishihara generally gives me enough to get by okay, but I'd really like more. I can't make much scientific progress by spending all my money on feeding the eight or so Pokemon I house here, right? Plus, I'm still got college loans, and stuff." The woman pointed at her cell phone. "Some of the other starter-givers in other regions have rejects that are worth actual money. They're willing to sell them to me for 2,500 pyen. If you can pay me 10,000 pyen, I'll give you one of them."
She smiled wider. "As you may know, you only get 5,000 pyen when you start here. Obviously, that's half of what you need. If you give me that, you're only in a debt of 5,000 pyen. Since all the money you ever get goes to your account, the bank'll just deduct the money from your account and give it to me. Deal? How about I try and find the ones I'm offering..."
The woman punched a few buttons, listened to a handful of voicemails all the way through, and scribbled some notes down on the back of a crumpled, old receipt. After she finished, she glanced at the sheet. "For 10,000 pyen, I can get you a magnemite, a female eevee from mainland Jen...never mind, and a male charmander. Most of the time, professors keep the females to breed if they can't get anything better out of 'em."
She glanced back at the geodude trio. They rolled their eyes at her, preferring to keep to themselves unless she actually had food with her. "Unless you'd want a geodude or a shellder or the koffing? Then you get money...you can buy other things with money, you know. If you took my offer, you'd be relying on only one Pokemon for really long time."

Rachel gave it some thought, Magnemite was interesting, she had always kind of licked Eevee, but she had heard rumors about the Jentan Eevees, and it was obvious that Charmander would be as close to a dragon pokemon starter she could get.
"I'm probably going to regret this, but I'll give the Eevee a try," Rachel says.

Kauri shook her head. "No. I'm not giving a poor, unsuspecting kid one of those things. Look, kid, Jenta's got a bad reputation for certain Pokemon. I don't really trust many of the Pokemon I get from there if they're anything that's usually desirable. Why do you think I said 'never mind'?" She rolled her eyes. "Haven't you heard the stories? Some of them die when they try to evolve, or even attack their trainers. I'm not giving away something that's going to land me in jail, or something."
She jabbed her finger at the geodude on the table. "If you want an eevee, take a geodude. Trust me. It'll be better in the long run. They're sturdy, I checked 'em all over multiple times myself, and they can take a beating in this mucky fog cuz they were born here. I doubt you'll like the charmander, too - he's from a region as poor as Miteinjan that shouldn't have any need to get rid of a charmander, cuz they're so close to Kanto. He probably has a birth defect or anger management - you live in Miteinjan, you learn to not trust certain regions as much as you learn not to trust the locals."
The geodude all just rolled their eyes. Well sure they were better than some foreign Pokemon! They were underappreciated rock-types, for crying out loud, they could take a beating from anything!

"I guess I could try a Geodude," Rachel says, having taken a little aback by the reaction.

"Good girl," Kauri mumbled, then jabbed her thumb at the geodude trio. "Well, pick one, then."
The first geodude, one of the two girls, glared at Rachel with an air of "I hate you, since you look stupid", and then began to ignore her.
The second, the male, stared at her in a more challenging manner, trying to see if by acting tough she would actually do something impressive.
The third, the other female, just ignored her completely, as she found drawing on a printed email with a pencil she found much more interesting.
Kauri coughed. "Um, yeah. They're a bit...yeah. But they're still good Pokemon, probably, deep down."

"Yeah, they all seem so appealing, now I remember why I loved Geodude so much back home," Rachel mutters sarcasticaly, lowering her sunglasses a little to get a good look at the 3 Geodudes. "I could give the male a try, I suppose."

The geodude crossed his arms and smirked at the angry-eyed female. He muttered something in his gravely tongue that sounded smug.
"Now now, you've been left for long enough because of your attitude, too," Kauri reminded him just to stop a fight.
There was another rumble, and Kauri sighed at the fact that she was being forced to translate. "He says as long as you're ready to battle a lot he's happy to partner you, and is up for a challenge," the professor relayed, touching the pokemon with a pokeball.
He disappeared into the pokeball and the professor handed this to Rachel. "Here you are, your first official pokemon, and this hunk of junk--," she rummaged on a shelf, bringing down a pattered pokedex with slots along one side, and a round area to clip in pokeballs, "is your pokedex. I'm afraid it only has basic stats functions right now, and accesses you bank account. There are chips which can add functions."

"Okay, thanks," Rachel says, taking the stuff, and starts for the door before stopping. "I might know someone who could help you get some better starters, my foster dad back in Orebugh works with extinct pokemon, and I know for a fact that they've got more than they can handle, maybe I can work something out."

"Steel pokemon don't hold up very well in Miteinjan," Professor Kauri shook her head. "They rust. And I'm not having a cranidos in here. It's bad enough when I get rejected fierce pokemon from Jenta. Besides, they're reptiles. Can't stand reptiles. Though you're right, and I do need to restock. Well, perhaps I'll see you on Fog Path, if you're going that way. Unless you're going to stop off at the breeders' place, or the storage shed first."

"If you ever change your mind, or get desperate enough, here's his number," Rachel says, and writes down a number on a piece of paper, and hands it to the professor before heading out, and going towards Fog path.
