Ame stepped onto the dry arena, a team of 6 Pokemon she'd never used before on her belt. She yawned, feeling the fatigue of her work day (preschoolers had too much energy), and rubbed her bleary eyes. All she really wanted to do was sleep.
She waited for the other girl to get inside while she grabbed her lead Pokemon. Letting it out, it revealed a rather grumpy-looking skarmory.
He glared at Ame, cawing angrily.
She held up her hands in defense. "Hey, I'm just using you for the battle."

Rachel steps into the arena, unlike Ame with a team she had already grown to be familiar with. "Alright, a Skarmory, huh? Well lets start this off with an old favorite, go Salamence!" She shouts, and the blue and red dragon pokemon bursts out of her pokeball.

Ame nodded. "Alright, let's begin with Spikes! Careful, now," she advised, pulling out a book on battle strategy. She'd never really liked battling 6-on-6 in this sort of situation, and procrastionation reigned supreme...
The skarmory rolled his eyes at his untrained trainer, and swooped into the air. Luckily, he was smaller than the dragon, not to mention faster...dodging attacks should be easy as long as he stayed far away.
And lucky for him, this attack just needed him near the floor...
Once he gained altitude, he dove quickly, going underneath the salamence and towards Rachel's side of the field. Once he got low enough, he dropped a multitude of spiky quill-balls, leaving them to settle on the floor. He kept doing this until the floor on her side was covered with them, then swooped up high.
The chase had begun.

The Salamence had gone high, keeping a close eye on her trainer who is considering her next move carefully. "Alright Salamence, lets go in for a Zen Headbutt!" Rachel commands.

Ame didn't bother paying attention, as she suddenly realized she had almost no experience in ordering around a skarmory. She swore mentally, wondering if her three-minute studying in a good team actually payed off (or just left her in a worse situation).
This is what I get for never bothering to make a pigeon-hole team, she grumbled. Now she was regretting her lack of using the same Pokemon more than once (or twice, in certain situations).
"Just...fly and stuff," she muttered as the bird swooped down. Luckily, the bird knew more of what he was doing than his temporary trainer.
He knew that Zen Headbutt was a "physical" attack, meaning it had to hit short-range. He knew that Zen Headbutt would do barely anything to him even if he was in short-range, thanks to type advantages. He knew that he had started the battle as a chase-battle, keeping as far away from the salamence as possible. He knew that his speed stat was just as good as the salamence's, meaning he could easily keep the distance from shrinking too much. And he knew that all of the attacks he needed for the dragon were long range.
He chattered the attack he was going to do to Ame, causing an, "oh, yeah, good idea. Why don't you do that?" to come out of her mouth.
The skarmory grinned a beaky grin as he flew faster and faster, swooping around the gym while the salamence tried to catch up. He banked right, letting the Zen Headbutt graze off his back, barely causing him any damage.
Honestly, he still couldn't see why they were fighting to please two little girls, but that wasn't the point.
The steel bird then gained altitude as the salamence broke away, his attack finished. Then the bird grinned, following the dragon from above.
Suddenly, poisonous spikes shot out at the dragon, aiming to embed themselves in his scaley rump. Once the Toxic attack was performed, the skarmory returned to his flight pattern of salamence-hot-potato.

A Toxic attack, hmm, so far they're thinking that Salamence is at an advantage when it comes to speed, but speed isn't everything, Rachel thinks, and then nods, and suddenly gives a command. "Salamence, Fly down!" She commands, and the dragon pulls her wings back, and pulls into a dive as the poison barbs graze the end of her tail, and she pulls back up, this time going in for an attack against the Skarmory, putting on an extra burst of speed, preparing for another attack.

((Just interjecting into the battle quickly. Nyaa, since you're part of this, you can't be expected to moderate the battle. Would either Ruin or you mind if I stepped in and took up that role? Someone's got to.))

((I'm fine with that. How about you, Ruin? Oh - and for Whirlwind, which has random values (since you can't pick the Pokemon that replaces the one that gets the Whirlwind), should we use a number generator? Maybe I can assign a number to each of your Pokemon, in the order they appear on your roster. So Blaziken: 1, Sceptile: 2, Swampert: 3, Salamence: 4, Gardevoir: 5, Metagross: 6? And what about attacks that have added effects with percentage values, such as 60% freezing possibilities on my blissey's Ice Beam (because of Serene Grace)? Should we use number generators for that, too? Oh, and if one of our Pokemon gets confused...how do we decide if it hurts itself or the opponent?
Oh, and by the way, Ruin...if your salamence got hit by any of the barbs, he got badly poisoned. Just so you know.))
The skarmory paused, watching the poisoned dragon from up above. He considered the move he was planning on using, and realized there was no way it would reach the dragon during the duration of his turn.
He glanced at his trainer, and gestured to the layer of spikes on Rachel's side of the field.
Ame looked up from her page on wobbuffet strategy, and glanced at the salamence. "Yeah, you'd probably be better off doing that. I can't see you hitting him with anything from where I am," she noted before looking back down at the book and its full-color picture of a wobbuffet using Counter.
The bird nodded, relieved she wasn't stupid enough to suggest an attack herself. He then swooped down, flying low to the floor above the layer of spikes. As he did, he dropped a second layer, watching the spikey floor with an evil glee. Wouldn't he have fun hearing the shrieks of Rachel's Pokemon as they came out of their Pokeballs? The spikes were unavoidable when they entered the battlefield...what fun!
Once he finished, he flew up high, grinning a beaky grin at the dragon far below. He cawed an equivalent of "come and get me" in his taunting voice, ready to start the chase once again.

Rachel was thinking about the spikes too, but in her case a way to get around them, thats when it hits her, and she grins, as she makes a motion for the Salamence, weakened a little from the poisoning to come back towards her, and she hoped that her opponent wouldn't catch on.
As the Salamence passed over close to Rachel, she circles around again, hardly noticing that there's something shiny wedged between her claws as she goes in for a Zen Headbutt.

The skarmory continued to weave his way around the stadium, feeling the salamence gaining on him. He slowed, banking to the left. The headbutt once again only grazed his side, barely causing a scratch. He never thought psychic-types were any good - why should a psychic-type attack with a physical nature cause anything but the loss of (at most) four or five hit points?
Then he eyed his trainer with a beaky grin, cawing out what he was about to do.
Ame looked up. "Yeah, it would be a good time for that," she told him, agreeing, and then looked back down.
The steely avian zoomed up ahead, gaining on the slowing dragon. He then turned around, opening his wings. Once the dragon came closer, he slammed his wings shut a few times, creating a huge whirlwind.
The whirlwind caught the dragon full-force, sending him flying back into his Pokeball without another word.
((Okay...number generator gets 2, so that's Sceptile.))
The wind also picked up another Pokeball, the second from the top of her roster. It dropped to the ground, letting out the sceptile inside.
Ame's borrowed skarmory cawed with delight when it landed on the unavoidable spikes, undoubtedly causing a rather large chunk of damage.

(Hey, all my pokemon except Metagross are female.)
That was lucky, Rachel thinks, having grabbed a pokeball that Ruby had dropped into her hand, and clipped it back on her belt. "Alright Sceptile, Quick Attack!"

Ame glanced up, a startled look on her face. "Lucky?"
The skarmory was laughing when the sceptile slammed into him. He didn't even try to dodge, and it barely did what the Zen Headbutt did! Flying higher, he stayed up for a little bit, in order to catch his breath.
Ame paused. "Grass-type, huh?" Now she was torn. Should she keep it out? Well, she supposed somebody else (like her skarmory's partner in crime) could take care of it. "Maybe we should Toxic it, too?"
The bird, once he caught his breath, shrugged his shoulders (quite a feat while flying). He had the advantage of being in the air, while the sceptile was on the ground. In a spikey area of the arena. Shouldn't be too hard.
He swooped down, flying low to the ground on Ame's side of the arena (she'd long since gone back to her page on blissey). He gained a little bit of altitude once he got near the spikes, and as soon as he reached the sceptile, he dropped a barrage of poison barbs. Grinning his beaky grin, he charged back up to the high altitudes to watch the badly-poisoned grass-type from above.

I gotta take that thing down, Rachel thinks, realizing that her Sceptile was in a tight spot, and she couldn't switch out, and mentaly slaps herself for suggesting that.

The skarmory quickly zoomed upwards, getting almost out of reach of the sceptile's jump. He let the black slash slide off his right leg, crowing with glee. It tickled more than anything - he really did like to taunt the ickle grassy.
"Let's stick to the plan?" Ame called up in a questioning voice, even though she was giving a suggestion, and not a question.
The bird shrugged. They'd probably meet again...
And he beat his wings down, blowing the sceptile back into its Pokeball with a giggle of glee. Now two of his opponents were nice and poisoned - the sceptile had even felt the wrath of the two spike layers, so that's two opponents that had lost health. Compared to Ame's team's single health-loser (who, thanks to type matchups and such, hadn't really lost much), that meant he was winning. And he liked winning.
The whirlwind swirled around ((number gen gets 6)), lifting the last Pokeball in the line of six off the belt. It revealed a lumbering metagross...and the skarmory giggled as his fellow steel-type landed right on the spikes. He really liked watching the squeals of surprising pain!
