<Please, I'd be happy to knock the skulls of these two together,> the lotad said, glancing at the brothers grin. <I won't need much help doing so, either, if they're both as incompetant as they look.>
She growled even as the rattata ran up to her, smacked her beaky face with a tail whip, and the zigzagoon threw sand in her eyes.

(Does Rain give the commands, or is she on her own?)

((Rain doesn't control the lotad until she captures it. Still a one on two fight is a little unfair, and it might be wise for Rain to sent out another pokemon to help.))

(Just making sure.)
"Go, Hera!" Rain says, and lets out her Torchic. "Use ember on that Ratatata!" She commands, and Hera sends a blast of fire at the rat.

The rattata yelped, and cannoned into the zigzagoon. The lotad, her eyes watering from the sand that had been thrown into them, grasped ahold of the spikey zigzagoon, and glowed green. The normal pokemon grew still for moment, and then jerked away slugishly, limping from the bruise that he had recieved from his partner.
The rattata, whirled, and glared at Hera. Muscles rippled under his coat, and he bounded foward to crash into her with a quick attack.

"Scratch!" Rain commands, and Hera scratches at the rat pokemon at the same time.

The rattata yelped as he was thrown back, his face stinging (he hadn't aimed at a great place...talons =/= weak spot).
The lotad, meanwhile, was having a similar amount of luck with the zigzagoon. Although she was thrown back with a tackle head-on (which left her rather woozy for a little bit), she lunged foward, preparing to absorb energy from her adversary.
She rammed into the zigzagoon's furry side, focusing. A green sphere of energy appeared at the side of the normal type's most recent injury, and hovered midair. Grinning a beaky grin, the split type bit down on it, leaving her feeling refreshed and the zigzagoon panting.

"Now use ember!" Rain commands, and Hera blasts the pokemon with an ember attack.

Lotad, seeing Hera's attack, swung around to the opposite side of his foe and rammed into it.
The rattata, who scurried backwards to attempt to escape the Ember, knocked into the flying zigzagoon. Both slumped to the ground...before getting roasted by the flames.
Rain's Pokedex beeped. "Your torchic and the wild lotad defeated two level 6 Pokemon. Your torchic, being at the level cap, does not gain any experience, but the lotad gains two levels, bringing it up to level 8."

"<Yeah, I think I am,>" the small Pokemon replied between deep breaths. "<Haven't had a good workout in awhile...Eh, if this keeps up, I think I'll lose some of that extra weight around the hips.>"
Turning her not-so-pliable body around (somewhat), she glanced at the body she had underneath the large leaf. "<I'd like to be fairly slim if I ever evolve...lotad are kinda pudgy anyway...but pudgey lombre? No, sir, I don't want to be a pudgy lombre...>"

"You have a point," Rain says. "Hey, would you like to come along with me? We could make a good team."

"<Hmmm...>" the lotad thought for a moment. "<I'd never really thought much about going with a trainer...though it could probably be helpful. It sure would be nice to evolve...>"
The young split-type thought for a moment, tapping her beak against the ground slowly. "<Well...>" she began in an uncertain voice. "<I don't really know you that well, though we did battle together well. You trainers...you do the gym challenges, right? Well, maybe we could have a trial run? I'll stick with you for your gym battle. After the battle, I'll decide if I want to go with you. I just want to make sure you aren't a poacher, or Pokemon-abuser, or worse. I'm a little overly-cautious, I guess,>" she grinned sheepishly.
((So basically, a mod will control the lotad directly, but she'll follow your commands. After the gym battle, she'll decide to join your team if you win. If you lose, it's a fifty-fifty chance. If she joins your team formally, then you catch her in a Pokeball, and then you get to control her.))

(Works for me.)
"Alright, that works for me," Rain says, and recalls Hera. "My plans might be a little, strange, but one thing I'll never do is abuse my pokemon," she says, and starts walking back towards Saphire, pausing to make sure the Lotad is following.

((Wait...are you still on the route, or leaving? Because the lotad is only level 8, you may want to train her two more levels. By the way, her attacks are Astonish, Growl, Absorb, Flail...that's an egg move that increases in attack power as her HP goes down. I think it'll be useful for Arisa's gym!))

(Well, some training wouldn't hurt, so yeah, we'll stay on the route.)

((Alright. One training Pokemon, coming right up!))
Suddenly, Rain was attacked by Yet Another Caterpie Militia. This time there were only four.
"<All right men! We've got an enemy lotad closing in! You know the drill!>" One of them roared in a gruff, stereotypical-army-commander voice.
"<Roger!>" The other three, all men (as the previous caterpie's dialogue would suggest). The captain the other, the second in command, hung back, but two rushed forward at the lotad.
"<Um...I think this is a double battle!>" The lotad called as she jumped to the side to wait for Rain's command. "<Is there any other Pokemon that needs training that I could fight alongside with? Any you'd like to train for the gym, maybe?>"
((If I were you, I'd use your zigzagoon instead of your caterpie. The zigzagoon, at least, has no weakness to ice or water. You could just say you deposited the caterpie for the zigzagoon...unless you really want a butterfree or something.))

((Well...you know logic around here is all but nonexistent. Would you like to have her out of the PC? I could have the PC system spaz, and remotely switch their Pokeballs...or something.))

(Yeah sure, that Caterpie won't help much, because of her, uhh, problems with Hera. I feel sorry for Professor Oak...)
