Tommy hummed Gilbert and Sullivan disjointedly as he walked into the opening of the rocky tunnel, Pai at his side. He scanned over the lines in the letter he had recieved at the Jenta Post Office a fifth time, trying to commit them all to memory. Thankfully, because his corospondant knew about the problems he faced with written words, the letter was only a page long.
It was a note from Miss Mel, telling him about a concert that his Dad had conducted at, and her adventures rewiring the sound system before the show. She was enjoying her time in Hoenn, although the training was difficult, and there were lots of rumors flying that made her itch to be in Johto.
At the bottom of the letter was his favorite piece, the bit containing all the advice Miss Mel had thought he'd need. It advised him to pick his three pokemon for the first gym challenge carefully, and train them like mad until he was sure that they were all ready.
He had already decided that he was going to use Pai against Arisa, and that meant going into every place accessible to him, and training against the wild pokemon there until they both collapsed in exhaustion.
<Hurry up Shihan!> Pai exclaimed from the gloom ahead.
Tommy sighed. Perhaps it was more like train until he dropped from exhaustion. Pai had an unbelieveable supply of energy.

((Heh. You were a smart one who chose a fighting type as your starter. Right there...that's one Pokemon I'll have an easy time writing against, because I don't have to make up excuses to make Arisa's Pokemon lose. X3 ))
Suddenly, a small mole Pokemon popped up out of the ground right before Tommy's feet.
"<Aaaah! Please don't step on me!>" She shrieked, digging her tunnel backwards rapidly to avoid being squished by sneakers. As soon as she figured she wouldn't, she calmed down and gave a small bow. "<My name is Sarah, and I'm your guide for your maze challenge. So...please don't attack me either!>"
Looking behind her, she realized that she came across a fork in the tunnel. "<Hmm...okay, so we're at a fork...>" She turned her brown head towards the boy and tyrogue. "<So, what'll it be? Are you going to want to go left or right? They're level...neither go down or up...and I can't see if they turn or not. Pretty plain choice...oh yeah, and what are your names?" Sarah asked in a peppy voice.

((Well, I thought that until I discovered that tyrogue don't learn ANY fighting type moves until they evolve. Which is level 20. Which is way beyond the trainer cap. ._. I'm going to have to go down to the wishing well and see if it's feeling like being generous with TMness.))
<Challenge!> Pai jumped in the air and grined wildly. <Yes! I shall beat this challenge, for I am Pai! And this is my Shihan,> Pai patted Tommy on the knee, as if Tommy was a good pet. <He's just great.>
"Hello Sarah, Just call me Tommy," Tommy waved, and looked around the tunnel. "There's a challenge to this place? I just thought that it was somwhere I could train Pai. Umm, but I'll go left, I think."

"<Left it is, then,>" Sarah chirped before she turned her shallow tunnel in the direction Tommy indicated.
The tunnel itself grew a little darker, and the rocks jutted out of the side, hindering Sarah's straight path. Suddenly, one of the rocks lunged above her head toward Pai.
"<Geodude! Watch out!>" The diglett yelled at the tyrogue.

<Wha'?> Pai was nearly flattened under the boulder pokemon. <Why does everyone seem to like landing on my face so much?> Pai asked, his voice muffled.
He fed his hands under the heavy rock, and pushed upward. Muscles bunched and moved on his arms, showing the strength he'd have later. He raised the geodude high enough to scoot out from under it, and then he scoot, before letting it dorp backto the floor with a crash.

"<Oof!>" grunted the geodude as he landed in a very awkward position.
He also landed on a slope, and started to roll, and roll, and roll and roll and roll and roll...
Until he crashed into a stalagmite and knocked himself out.
"<Ah, sometimes this happens when we fight around here,>" Sarah sighed. "<It's strange, you'd think us Pokemon of the 'Maze would be used to fighting in tunnels enough to avoid one-hit-knock-outs like that...oh, and that was a level 6 geodude, by the way. I think your tyrogue was level 5...so he's now level 7. Good job, Mister Tyrogue!>"
She dug a little farther, and let Tommy to another fork in the path. Turning her brown head, she explained the choice. "<Okay, so here we have a path to the right that goes up, and a path to the left that is level but turns sharply. It may go up or down later, I can't tell. So...which way do you want to go?>"

"Hmm," Tommy tried to think, and ignore Pai, who was strutting around, and trying to strike muscular poses. "Up probably means zubat, and I don't know if Pai is ready for that (at knee height: <Of course I'm ready!>), so I guess we'll go left again."
((Blegh. Bad post.))

"<Alright...>" Sarah led Tommy down the tunnel, which suddenly came to a large pile of boulders. Looking up at Tommy, she explained, "<Um, here we have a cave-in. They happen, sometimes. Sorry! Uh, it might be dangerous to try to get our way through, though it may be possible...or we could go back and take the other route. What do you want to do?>"

<Danger?> Pai asked. <I like danger! Come along Shihan, let's --,>
"Let's go back the way we came," Tommy said quickly. "We don't want to put Sarah in any harm, which she would be if we triggered another cave-in or something. Let's go back to the right. Plus, there are probably more pokemon there."
<Oh! Right Shihan,> Pai said brightly, and quickly wheeled around to run off back up the tunnel, feeling full of fighting energy.
"Akk! Sorry, Miss Sarah!" Tommy said, before sprinting after his pokemon, worried about what trouble the energetic tyrogue could get into on his own. In a flash of insight, he wondered if it had ever been this hard on his father, having to raise him. "Pai, wait up!"

"<That's...okay?>" Sarah muttered before diving underground. She could tunnel much faster if she didn't bother to leave her head where people could see - and step on - her.
Pretty soon, she caught up to Pai and Tommy. Poking her head up, she paused. "<Um...I'm sorry, Mister Tyrogue...and...um...what are your names?>" Without waiting for them to answer, she took a glance at Tommy's dropped registration form. "<Oh! Mister Tommy and Mister Pai...I see, I apologize for not asking your names first.>" The little ground time bowed her head.
Looking around, she realized her earlier point. They were at a five-way fork...these didn't happen at the edge of the maze! How long had they run for...? "<Well...we're at a five-way fork...>"
Should I tell them I don't know how deep we got in? Sarah wondered, a little scared. This has never happened...my groups have always walked! And I've never gotten lost before...
"<Well...um, one path, which is the one we came from, goes straight for awhile. Another, the far right going forward, that one seems to slant downward and to the right. The one in the middle to the right goes straight for a long time. The middle-and-to-the-left one seems to go up, but straight, and the far left one takes a U-turn backward to the left.>" Looking up at the looming human, she smiled weakly. "<So, which way to you want to go, Mister Tommy?>"

"Well, the middle path seems to be the most sensible," Tommy said. "Probably not easy to get lost in the--,"
<No!> Pai exclaimed. <Come Shihan! Let's go to the right and down. Down into the depths of the earth! Hahahahaha!>
He began to March into the tunnel farthest to the right. Tommy shrugged. "Sorry about this Miss Sarah. I suppose we can go that way. It's his training, after all, not mine."
Although, I beginning to be not so sure about that, he thought, feeling his leg muscles begining to ache from the run, and he began walking again to follow Pai.

All of a sudden, a mawile hopped out from behind a rock. Giggling at the little fighting-type, she gave an innocent smile. "<Too bad I'm not Group 1!>" She sang happily.
Sarah sighed. "<I thought she left with that geodude's group...>"

"Yikes!" Tommy jumped back from the freakish -- thing. What the heck was it? As usual Pai jumped in front of him, but Tommy shook his head. "Pai don't make me return you. Sorry, um, mis--ter? I don't want trouble. I'd just like to be training my tyrogue, please, and if you hadn't noticed, he's a lot weaker than you.I mean we could battle, but I'd rather not."
Pai stared up at Tommy his eyes wide. He then looked back at the mawile. <I'm sorry, my Shihan becomes a little confused at times. What he meant was: Of course we'll battle.>
"No, I didn't," Tommy began to protest, when Ora popped from her pokeball.
<I'm sorry, Tommy, I know you wanted this session to be just for Pai,> she began, however, she saw Pai and Tommy staring at her. <Excuse me, is there something on my face?> the polite weedle inquired.
"Ora, you're glowing," Tommy said, awed.
<Am I?> Orainquired, before her body stiffened suddenly. <Oh dear. One moment please, I believe I am evolving. And While I'm evolving, Tommy, could you please change that shirt, it's dirt--," However her voice began to buzz so baddly at this point that she couldn't be heard.
Tommy and Pai watched in fascination as Ora grew and swelled, her features invisible in the glowing light of energy, until the Weedle no longer "stood" before them, but a Kakuna, laying on it's side. <Oh my,> she said, her voice more buzzy, and a little deeper. <Excuse me Miss Mawile.>

((Mrrr...just realized your rendition of "Lilith" and my rendition of "Lilith" were completely different...this is "Lilith"'s twin sister. *nod nod*))
Mawile giggled happily. "<Aw, you evolved into an unmoving yellow thing...cute!>" She then promptly disappeared in a shadow. Reappearing next to Ora, she opened her fake jaw, dark energy licking off of it. Her goal was to bite down on Ora...yayz for Faint Attack!
((Blegh! Spam post! @_@))

((Really? o.0 I thought that they were similar. I only added in a perchant for teasing via songs into the sneekiness quotient. And because it's easy to rhyme insulting words with "Ruby."))
<Unngh!> Ora buzzed in pain as darkness licked around the steel jaws encasing her body.
In return, the still kakuna spit a string shot at the mawile, hoping that the solidified spit would disgust the steel type pokemon. Hopefully disgust her before Ora's shell started to crumple under the power of the bite-faint attack.
<You leave Ora alone!> Pai yelled, dashing in from the side, his tiny fists coming around in a brick break attack. As if that was going to do a lot to the pokemon that was almost twenty levels higher tha he was.

"<Graaagh!>" The mawile reared backwards, her fake jaws stuck together by the sticky string. "<Aw! Now I can't bite...grrg...graaargh...ARGH! THEY'RE NOT COMING APART!>" She pouted with her real mouth as she tried in vain to open her fake one. But alas, the string hardened, and they were glued shut. "<This sucks-ow.>" The steel-type peered at the tyrogue. "<That didn't really hurt.>"
After swinging around her dead-weight fake jaw at the annoying fighting-type to get him to go away, she lunged at Ora with a Faint Attack. After disappearing, she reappeared, using the fake jaw as a sort of ramming device. It might not have been as effective as a bite-based Faint Attack, but it still would cause some damage.

The still kakuna skidded across the uneven floor of the cave, bumping into rocks at every turn. <Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow.> However she didn't skid very far, and Tommy grinned, getting an idea.
"Ora, string shot onto the ceiling, and play like a spinarak," he told his awesome bug pokemon.
<What? Excuse me, Tomas, I don't under -- ah -->
With that a white glob shot toward the ceiling, and Ora reeled herself up a few inches by gobbling up excess string. Twitching the bottom of her cocoon, where her stinger must once have been, she began to swing herself back and forth, like a child on a swing set. Back and forth, back and forth, back and she twisted swinging around from the right to hit the steel type with her cocoonful body.

The mawile, who totally didn't expect the kakuna to slam into her (she'd been sort of mesmerized by the swinging...back...and forth...and back...and forth...), was knocked into the wall and promptly knocked out.
Tommy's Pokedex beeped. "Your kakuna (level 26) just defeated a wild mawile (level 28). Your kakuna gains two levels, putting it at level 28. Would you like your kakuna to evolve?"

"Yes please!" Tommy said, breathing out in relief. He didn't think that the trick with the string shot was going to work twice, and while he loved Ora just the way she was, having a pokemon that couldn't move was a bit of a draw back.
Besides, Ora was visibly twitching under the cocoon, which was becoming more and more transparent. Even as he said "Yes." there was a sharp CRACK! And a wet stinger glistened in the dim light of the cave, sliding out the bottom of the cocoon. The cracking riddled Ora's golden body, which split up the back, exposing membranous wings, which hung wetly in the air.
From the floor of the cave, Pai looked up in dazed amazement as Ora continued to expand and grow, cocoon fragments raining down. His head was ringing from the force of the mawile just shoving him off, and he really wanted to sleep, now.
Tommy, amazed as he was by the spontaneous evolution of his kakuna, saw the tyrogue's distress, and returned him. Looking over at the mawile he thought long and hard, and then tossed a great ball at it to see if that would work.

((You just ruined the poison party in Group 2. >_<
And yay, you got a Lilith clone. ^_^ Except...erm...a pre-Ruin Lilith clone...))
The great ball shook a few times, then was still.
Tommy's Pokedex beeped, now that it had the stats. They were:
Mawile Gender: Female Level: 28 Group: 2 Nickname: you choose Ability: Intimidate: upon entry, all opponent's attack stats drop Attacks: Sweet Scent, Vicegrip, Faint Attack, Fire Fang (w007 for DP egg move!) Personality: Playful, giggly, and a bit of a trickster. She will tease and sing, annoy others to no end, and have fun in her own special way. She's nice...if you don't mind the teasing. She and Ora don't seem to get along...she thinks Ora is too prissy, and Ora thinks she's too not-serious. Nina's a bit afraid of her...
((Because you know you want Nina, too. X3))
