Natty had no idea how to explain it, but she simply /knew/ that she couldn't use peck too many more times. She also knew that her trainer, silly thing that she was, would have no clue that such was the case. Despite all of her screaming at the girl, Natty actually did kind of like her. She was a nice girl, and she had been so upset when she thought Natty was in trouble-she still was, fact.
Phaise, for her part was busing jabbing buttons on her pokedex. When a picture of Natty finally came up again, Phaise grinned. Maybe she could do this battling thing! "Try a leer attack, Natty!" She made a note to ask the bird what the attack that the gastly had just done was called. And what it did.
Mew! For the love of Mew! The girl had to be psychic! Or else, Natty was simply one lucky bird. Phaise might have no clue what strategy was, but thing seemed to be working out in that. <You're so getting lessons after this....> Resisting the urge to yawn, feeling tired once more, Natty stared at the bird, a smirk on her face as she used leer.

<Lessons, hah, I don't need no stinking lessons,> the gastly said arrogantly, thinking that Natty must be talking about him, because he was awesome and terrifying, after all. <In fact, I am going to school you, you bird!>
His eyes began to glow red again, but they flickered back to white as annoyance and anger interrupted his attack. The face the natu had pulled had just been grotesque. It seemed to be insulting him very personally, and made him want to get her, without any regard to his personal safety.
<Oh yeah?!> the ghost growled, zipping in close, his eyes flickering red, and his spite possessing the natu's body. <Take that you molting pigeon!>

Natty had to try very hard not to roll her eyes, <Not you, idiot.> If Phaise even attempted to catch this gastly, Natty was going to peck her until she bled. She was /not/ sharing a trainer with this creature. Let it torture some other poor soul.
Phaise bit her cheek-should she try peck again? She wanted to finish this battle quickly, so that she could run to the pokemon center. She really was worried about Natty. Perhaps being a trainer wasn't such a good idea...Well. At least she knew she had control over catching additional pokemon. Natty wasn't going to convince her to capture this pokemon, no matter what!
What the heck-Phaise could run really fast if things turned sour. "Try peck again!"
Natty didn't feel so good. In fact, she was beginning to think coming to this floor had been a bad idea. Perhaps they should have battled some mankey's first...gotten stronger...she could remember gastly's being this strong...
While her thoughts tumbled into a daydream, her eyes half-closed, she dimly heard Phaise say something. Not quite sure what it was, she tilted her head, before realizing that Phaise had said to use a peck attack. Why would she want to do that though? She was nearly asleep, and she was soo tired...
Oh. Right. Gastly. Shaking herself awake, deciding that nothing Phaise decided to do after this battle would wake her, she tried to peck the gastly again, seriously worried about whether she would be able to do so even one more time.

The gastly was about to try licking his opponent again, when her blunt yellow beak caught him. He took the hit between the eyes, which rolled up in surpise. Natty hit him with the force of a sledge hammer to his non-existent skull. It felt as though his head was splitting open, or ungasing, or whatever, and black light burst before his eyes. The pokemon dissipated, and a computerized voice started up:
[You have defeated a level seven opponent gastly] [Your natu has gained two levels] [Your natu is now level seven] [Your natu can learn Night Shade] [Another foe is approaching] [Do you want to face it?]

"Eeep!" Lurching to her feet, Phaise grabbed up Natty, hugging her to her chest. "No! I don't!" Taking the few running steps needed to hurl herself at the elevator, she jabbed the button with her elbow, unwilling to relinquish her hold on Natty.
Natty, for her part, struggled to free herself from Phaise's firm, though gentle, grasp. <I'm fine! What's your problem? I thought you wanted a gastly!> What was this girl's problem? It would figure Natty would end up with a crazy one.
"They're mean!" Phaise gasped, as she was finally able to stumble into the door and jab the button that would lead her out of the building.
<Not all of them! C'mon, you need another pokemon, and gastly are-usually-good!>
Phaise simply shook her head and fled from the building, ignoring the stares of others. She knew where the pokemon center was-she'd seen it on the way, and so she entered the building in record time for someone new to the city. "Can you check my natu? She was battling a gastly, and it didn't look good..." Holding out Natty with a trusting expression on her face, she waited for the nurse to reply.
Natty, with a cross expression, tried to explain once more, <I'm fine! And a gastly is a perfectly good pokemon!>

"No arguing," A busty blond nurse tapped Natty on the beak smartly, before picking the pokemon up, and looking at her. "Well, nothing physically is wrong, but you said a gastly? One moment," she bent over and retrieved a black light. She shone it on Natty's green body, making her feathers glow neon, but a purple and red haze surrounded the natu's beak, and there was a bright blue splotch in the same place where the ghost's tongue had gone through her. The nurse snapped the light off. "All right, this little lady looks as though she was thoroughly spited, and licked once. Nothing too serious -- although lick can occasionally cause a slow acting paralysis from lingering disgust and fear, but I think she's handling the situation well. Anyway, put her in her pokeball for a moment to rest, and I'll put her in the machine, and everything will be a-okay."

Natty shook her head, which effectively meant shaking most of her tiny body. <Hey!> Without much say in the matter, she had to go along with the inspection, although she made sure her scowl was strong enough to get the point across to any but the most oblivious. Of course, it seemed as if Phaise was one of those.
Phaise, for her part, was very relieved when the nurse told her everything would be okay. Retrieving Natty's pokeball, and returning the bird to it, she smiled. "I'm so glad! I was so worried about her." She handed over the pokeball to the nurse, finally getting down to what Natty had said. Maybe not all gastly were mean, but she didn't think she could go back to face them. At least, not until Natty was either much stronger, or she had another pokemon she could call on for help.
She was smart enough to know that Natty could take down the mankey with more ease than she when battling the gastly, so she knew that could be a semi-quick way to gain some strength. However, she didn't know whether she wanted to catch any of the other pokemon in the building. Mankey were out of the question, with Natty's vehement dislike of them, but Phaise wasn't sure she had the courage to get a gastly.

The nurse put the pokeball in the machine, and listened to it bing and beep for a moment, before returning Natty's pokeball to Phaise. "There you are, dearie. She should be at 100% and ready to continue life as a battling pokemon. You have a good day, now, okay?"

Phaise took Natty's pokeball, a smile on her face. "Thank you so much!" Her pace out of the pokecenter was much slower than the one it had taken to get into it. She was hesitant to release Natty however, remembering the Natu's response the first time she had brought her out of her pokeball.
She needn't have worried, since Natty released herself. <Are you happy now? C'mon. A gastly isn't a bad pokemon.> Natty could only describe her stubbornness in getting a gastly by the fact that it was the only pokemon /she/ approved of here in Ruby City. And simply because Phaise didn't want to get one, any longer.
"But..."
<If you don't get a gastly, I won't be your friend anymore.> It was a lie, but Natty had the shrewd idea that her trainer would know this. She didn't seem to be terribly intelligent. Even if Natty wasn't a good liar.
"Fine! We'll go back!" Phaise was seriously regretting getting this pokemon. Maybe her resolve to get the first starter that had an 'X'-or in her case, the starter form-was a bad idea. Not only was Natty strange, but she was a bully too.
Still, in short order she found herself staring at closed elevator doors, about to enter the room full of gastly once more.
<I wonder how they keep the gastly in here? Why don't they just float through the walls to freedom?>

At that moment, a gastly poked half her head out through the door to the gastly room to meet the oncoming trainer. "<They have a bit of a forcefield around this place,>" she offered, grinning widely at the trainer's surprised expression. "<I can't come out anymore than just this, and this is already making me feel awfully constricted.>" Her grin grew and grew, and her tongue tumbled out, lolling lazily. "<Are you gonna come in and meet me, then? Or are you content to stand there all day, shivering at the idea of going up against a scary little ghost like me?>"

Phaise squeaked, nearly choking on her own terrified noise, if such a thing were possible. Sure, this gastly wasn't being as mean as the other one had been, but it was just as scary looking, and it could just be mean in an even meaner way. That is to say, it could be sneakier, and once she got close enough, it'd terrify her even more.
Natty, impatient enough with her trainer, hopped down from her trainer's shoulder, scuttling forward. <Is that how it goes? Interesting.> A force field, hm? Yes, it was interesting. Kind of sad, too. Still, at least it made it possible to catch a decent pokemon early on. Phaise would need one. <I don't suppose you mind if we battle?> If she could have frowned with a beak, she would have. As it was, she sighed. This gastly was being so kind-well, besides the little taunt-that it would have been cruel not to warn her. <Chances are, however, if we beat you that Phaise is going to try and capture you.>
"I-I am?" Bunching the skirt of her dress in her hands, she gulped. "I...I guess I am..." Inching forward behind her tiny pokemon she swallowed. She hoped that other gastly didn't show up, and she hoped this one truly was nice. Nicer than Natty, in fact, since her starter was such a meanie.

The gastly grinned. "<Oh, I'd love to be beaten, tossed aside, ripped apart, and made to go crazy. Traveling with a battle-hungry psychic and a paranoid trainer would very much make me the happiest ghost alive,>" she replied sweetly. "<Of course, I can't battle you like this, with my head half-stuck through the door - I'll be waiting inside, my dears.>" And with that, she phased back through the door, leaving the trainer to make her final decision.

"Paranoid? I'm not paranoid! Am I paranoid, Natty?" With the gastly out of view, Phaise was able to speak without halting. If Natty had been taller, Phaise would have been shaking her shoulders as she spoke.
<Oh, you're paranoid. But I didn't think I was battle-hungry...> Chirping happily, Natty hopped into the room, ignoring Phaise's pained expression as she rushed after her, sliding through the door after Natty, once more back into her 'paranoid' state. She couldn't help it-One bad experience with a gastly meant that surely more were to follow.

The gastly was inside, just behind the door, waiting for them. She smiled sweetly, the dim lighting and machine-produced fog of the gastly room making it seem like her eyes were dully glowing.
"<Since I'm such a nice person,>" she began slowly, her smile frozen on her face. "<I'll let the little psychic have the first move. Go ahead and beat me, sweetie.>"

Shuddering, Phaise glanced at the pokedex she pulled out of her bag, reaffirming the name of the new move that her pokemon knew. Taking a deep breath, she tried to issue the order with a confident voice, but only managed to succeed in not hesitating. "Natty, use Night Shade..."
Natty, apparently getting used to Phaise's rather easily scared temperament, fluffed her feathers up in preparation as the light suddenly grew even dimmer, if at all possible, and Natty seemed to grow in size, staring menacingly at the gastly.
In retrospect, it probably wasn't that frightening for the gastly. Didn't they do things like that all the time anyways?

It might not have been frightening to the ghastly, since it was a move familiar to the pokemon, but it did succeed in throwing her backwards and causing a fair amount of damage.
"<Well, then,>" she said with a sigh, her breathing a little labored. She floated up close to Natty, and her gaseous body took on a strange coloration. "<Just try that move again, sweetie,>" she mocked, clearly using the move spite on the natu.

Phaise was learning however. It was obvious her social skills were slow to fix into place, and that she wasn't the best trainer the world had seen, but she was a quick learner. She also remembered things, and she remembered how, when the previous gastly had been mocking Natty, the natu had, for some reason, seemed to grow tired of peck.
So, Phaise decided to switch it around some. "Peck her, Natty!"
Natty, feeling her will for Night Shade drain a bit, wasn't at all upset about the command. In fact, being mocked only made her want to hurt that tongue. So she aimed for it, a silent taunt in her eyes.

The move connected with the gastly's tongue, leaving a small dent in it. The rest of the attack pushed her away from the bird again. Regaining her levitation, she smiled a bit, almost enjoying the pain she received.
<Well well. I guess you have more surprises, sweetie. Let me give you a little reward for efforts. > The ghost drifted over to the natu till her weightless mass hover in front of the natu again. With one clean movement, she extended her tongue out and swiped it in a way that seemed like she was trying to lick the bird. In fact, that was exactly what she wanted to do.

<Oh, ew.> Natty scrambled backwards, out of reach of the tongue of the gastly. She shook her head, which pretty much meant she shook her whole body, in response to the attack, but she was better suited to dealing with it than she had been with the last gastly. She was actually kind of proud of herself for that, glad that she was able to learn so quickly.
"Ah, Natty, use Leer." Phaise constantly looked around, to make sure there wasn't another gastly getting ready to frighten her, and she was anxious to get out of here quickly. Still, Natty was insistent that she catch a gastly, and she supposed if her new friend thought this one was okay it would be...Once Phaise got over her fear of the ghost, that was. Still, that didn't mean she had to like the entire situation, and it didn't mean she had to take her time in this battle. The faster they could win (and she was determined to win) the faster they could leave this scary floor.
Maybe Natty would let her choose her next pokemon. Something cute and cuddly. A rattata, perhaps?

The gastly floated backwards, seeing the awful expression on the tiny bird's face. Goodness, the thing must think she was scum of the earth! The gastly didn't like that, but she tried to shake it off. <Hah, hah. Trying to annoy me, are you? Nice try, sweet meats,> the ghost zoomed forward, all of a sudden, dropping her guard as she smacked Natty across the face with her tongue.
