"Cheery lot," Rosemary muttered, before walking to the door with the fire emblem on it. "You'd think that customer service would be in the manual, or something."
She knocked, and then opened the door without waiting for a reply.

Inside she found a middle-aged, wispy sort of woman tending to a few young magby babies. They were obviously ones that had recently hatched, so they were not up for sale, but by the size of the room, that didn't seem to be a problem.
Pens of magby lined the back, and a large amount of Pokeballs and incubated eggs sat waiting just behind.
The woman looked up from her three young ones. "Oh, hello, there. Are you here to buy a baby magby?"

"Yes please, Ma'am," Rosemary said, coming forward. These little fire imps were so freaking cool! She watched as one reach up to a ceramic bucket and grabbed a piece of coal. The glaze coating on the bucket scorched and cracked from the heat of the magby's arm. It tossed the coal lump into its mouth, and then burped a tongue of flame. So. Freaking. Cool.
"I'm Rose -- but you can call me Rosemary. I've got a female Shinx with the "rivalry" special ability, so I need a male magby to avoid fights among my team. Um -- can I feed these guys some coal?!" She squeaked the last bit, entirely excited.

The woman smiled. "Sure, but make sure they get small pieces of coal - if they're bigger than your thumb, break them in half. And don't let them grab at your hands too much - I'm trying to make sure they have good manners," she warned, tapping one of them on the head. The magby sputtered a little, cooing back. "These one's can't talk yet, by the way, so if you talk to them, don't expect much back."
She then stood up, leaving the babies to squeal at Rose to come over and play with them. The woman looked around at a couple of the spacious pens, all of which held three to five magby. She then reached down, and picked up a squirming fire imp, bouncing him a little to get a good hold on the non-scorching part of his body. The breeder smiled at him, and then carried him over to Rose.
The magby, who looked quite a bit older than the squealing babies the breeder had previously been tending to, looked up at Rose with interest. "<Hi,>" he greeted with a little wave. "<Are you my friend?>"
The breeder chuckled, scratching the little guy on the back of the neck. He giggled, swiping at her hands to stop. "This one is old enough to leave, but his talking isn't all that great. He can't say a lot of big words, but he's pretty smart. Battle-ready, definitely, though I wouldn't make him fight too hard quite yet. Definitely don't let him go up against anything more than two levels above him. He's pretty easy-going and enthusiastic, and likes to make friends and see new places. You're curious, aren't you?" she cooed to the little magby.
"<Yeah!>" The boy cheered, though it looked as if he wasn't sure what "curious" even meant.

"Coochi-choochi-coo," Rose said as she squatted down by the true babies. She reached into the bucket, and grabbed a few lumpbs of coal. These pieces had been pretty well cut before, but one was a little big. She broke the briquette as suggested, smearing her palms with soot in the process.
"So, who's been a good little magby, then? Who?" she questioned, tossing a small piece to the magby in the back of the pen, before handing the broken lump to the two fire drakes nearest her hands. "I've got one more. Who can say one? Who can say one? Can you say one?" she asked, holding the piece out of reach of the last magby.
The breeder came back, however, before she could coax an answer out of the infant magmar, and Rose handed the piece over as she turned to listen to the lady. She looked a little troubled as the lady mentioned no pushing the magby.
"I agree with you ma'am, about the two level thing -- but the thing is, I'm a bit of a pushy person, and I tend to over-estimate strength. Not so much stamina, but I'm always certain that my pokemon can take on anything. I mean, in the heat of battle. I want to win, y'know? And I'm certain I can -- but right now, when it's the cold light of day, I know it's not always possible for a level five to take on a level fifty -- but I'm a little worried that I'd try to push him a harder than I should in a moment of excitement. I'd love to be your trainer, of course," Rose addressed the magby, "but I don't know if you're quite as battle crazy as I and the rest of my team are. Are there any male magby who really, really are aggressive and want to fight?"

The breeder paused, picking up the clearly disappointed magby. "I'll go check. We probably have one - the really aggressive magby we have are both girls, but I'm sure I can find an energetic boy." She disappeared to the back, placing the magby in a pen, and looking around a different pen. The ones in this pen were all labeled as being older as the previous pen's, and two of them were already practicing their fire attacks (at each other).
The breeder pulled the two girls apart, and stepped in the pen. "Girl, girl, girl...ahah!" Her arms wrapped around a squirming magby, and pulled him out of the pen. She stepped over the railing, and then brought him over to Rose.
The fire imp all but dove out of the breeder's hands onto the floor. He grinned up at Rose. "<Let-th win! I can fight thuper good!>" He then began to grab at Rose's ankles, trying to get her to pick him up. "<I'm thuper thtrong!>"
"He's got a lisp, but he's battle-ready and very eager to win," the breeder explained. "He'll probably get teased about the lisp, but he's got a good head on his shoulders and can probably take it without blowing up too much. If you coach him properly, he can probably grow out of the lisp, but it really isn't a sign of anything wrong with him. It's just how he talks."

Arms, tails and the tops of the head are the areas of a magby where lava is closest to the surface. Rose yelped as the magby tried to pick her up, and jumped in the air, her shoes smoking.
"You've certainly got a gift for making people move, there," she told the magby. "What do you think about traveling with a shinx and fighting to gain levels? I didn't bring Deet with me because she's getting healed, but she's a wonderful pokemon -- if a little headstrong," Rosemary said. "She's likely to charge into battle and try to compete with you a bit. Is that something you can deal with?"

The magby grinned. "<I c'n handle anything! I'm thuper thtrong!>"
The woman smiled, unconsciously stroking the sides of the baby magby to her right. "Will you purchase him, then? He's 3000 pyen, with his pokeball included in that price. It also covers free access to our videophone/email hotline if you have any questions or problems raising him."

"Sounds great," Rose replied with a grin. "Anything I should know right now? Like not to let him have coal after eight, or something? Let me grab my pokedex, and," she rummaged in her bag, bringing out the metallic rectangle, "I can get your numbers registered in the address book, while you get my trainer registration info. You, my little man, you are named Bamf, and I'm Rose -- just call me Rosemary."

((My dear MorriganFearn, I don't know if "Bamf" is quite appropriate for a young child. )) "Very good," the woman replied, handing over the appropriate Pokeball along with a sheet of paper displaying the stats for the magby (with the name scrawled in with black permanent marker to complete them). They were as such: Magby Gender: male Level: 5 Nickname: Bamf Ability: Flame Body - causes a burn 1/3 of the time when the opponent makes physical contact Attacks: Smog, Leer Personality: Battle-ready and very eager to win. A very loyal friend and a very energetic child. Has a lisp. ((HOORAY FOR REALLY BAD QUALITY MODDING! ))

((All of Rosemary's pokies are going to be named after sound effects. Deet is the sound of my electric alarm clock. Bamf is the sound that Nightcrawler makes when he teleports, and seeing as his teleport dimension is basically a magmar's habitat it all works out in my confused little mind. I'm just not sure what she'll call a water type. Swish, maybe... )) "Thanks very much," Rosemary replied, taking the sheet, and looking at it. She looked back down at her magby, as she clipped his pokeball to her belt. "So, you know Smog and Leer, huh?" she asked. "Yeth!" the magby nodded and then looked around. Rosemary squatted down to his level -- which actually still had her head and shoulders above the little magma tyke. "We going thomewhere?" he asked, very confused. This human looked as though she was settling down, and normally, humans just took the magby and left. "Well, not at the moment," Rosemary replied. "I thought that we should exchange names, and stuff like that. I'm Rosemary." "Rothmary," the magby chortled, throwing off some sparks, "Rothmary. That'th fun to thay. What'th my name?" "What's your name?" Rosemary asked, bewildered for a moment. Normally kids knew their own names -- but then, she realized that as with Deet, this magby had probably been bred specifically for trainers, and there was a sort of point of pride when it came to naming your pokemon. "Well -- gee, um, something you'd like to say -- but something short, so I can remember it -- howabout," she paused, thinking furiously. "Um, Bamf! How about Bamf?" <Banth?> the magby repeated, scratching his bubbling head. <Okay! Bamth!> "Bam f, with an "f,"" Rosemary enunciated, before holding out her hand. "Alright, Bamf, I'm Rosemary, pleased to be your trainer." <Yeah! We'll do good!> little Bamf shouted, pumping the air with his fist in his excitement. <All right!> His tiny clawed paw took two of her fingers and shook them vigorously. <What now?> "Now," Rosemary said, standing, "we go to the Kobayashi Building, and meet Deet." <Yeah!> Bamf repeated, following Rosemary out of the room on toddling feet. <Go to the Kobayathi Building and meet Deet. Uh -- who'th Deet?> Rosemary turned to look down on him, grinning slightly. "She's my shinx. We were training earlier, and once you two get to know one another, you'll train some more. My goal for today is to get you to level seven, and then tomorrow we'll go to level nine, for both of you, and then the day after, level 10 and we'll take down the gym leader, what'd ya say?" <Thounds good,> the little magby said slowly, following his new trainer out of the breeding building. He looked up at the skyscrapers all around and the forest of legs that was humans. Wow. This was exciting! He'd never been outside of the room before this, and now -- wow! So many things, so many sights and other people. There had been so few humans before. So -- this was the great outside world! Rosemary, in the meantime, concentrated on not accidentally losing her new magby in the crowd. His strides were much shorter than her steps. Although he seemed comfortable with running, Bamf tended to veer in other directions a lot. However, no mishap occurred, and she did get back to the Kobayashi Building eventually. Walking up to the desk was a breeze, as Bamf scurried over the floor. "Hi," she told the guy at the desk. "It's me, Rose Marshal. Are you finished healing my shinx?"

((If you ever get a psychic or something short (and female...and half-Irish, half-Mexican...and an anthropologist) you should name her Poit. Like from Wapsi Square! )) The guy looked up from his cell phone, where he had been killing time texting his girlfriend (even though he wasn't supposed to use his cell phone when working the desk). He shoved it away, trying to look innocent by smiling and quickly running to grab the shinx's pokeball, as she had finished healing about ten minutes ago. "Here you go, miss!" he said cheerfully as he handed the trainer her shinx's pokeball. "All done and healed, good as new, battle-ready, all that jazz. Have a nice day!" And all this time, he was still texting - just by holding his cell phone behind his back, texting with one hand. Unfortunately, while accurately single-handed texting without looking was quite a talent to have, it was his only talent. But such was life for the young man, and he was determined to make sure he used his talent to the fullest (before texting went out to join the now-obsolete typewriter).

((Hmm, Poit sounds more like a Poison type... and Rosemary hates psychic types. Rosemary: Yeah, running around and thinking they're so special...))
"Alrighty," Rosemary said, touching the capture button on the pokeball. "Bamf, this is Deet."
The shinx emerged from the pokeball with a yawn, and then fastened her eyes on the tiny magby who was staring at her in wonder. The blue lion cub stared at Bamf for several moments, before sniffing tentatively. <Uh, it smells of sulfur. Quite strongly.>
"Deet!" Rosemary exclaimed in exasperation. "Bamf is a magby. They're made of lava -- and other biological stuff -- anyway, he's supposed to smell like sulfur."
The magby didn't look too happy with the remarks, and was trying to sniff his arm. However, pokemon who dwelt in volcanoes were often best served by not being able to smell, and Bamf couldn't detect the odor. <What'th thulfur?> he asked, feeling slightly hurt.
<Awww,> Deet purred. <He's so cute!>
<I am?> Bamf wasn't sure if he wanted to be cute. He was strong, after all. Could strong people be cute?
<Aww,> Deet sighed again, her fur becoming sleek to her body. She padded a few steps closer and then gasped in surprise. <He gives off his own heat field! Ohh! Can we keep him, Rosemary?>
"Well, he's going to be helping you battle, so I hope so," Rosemary pointed out.
<Yeth!> cried the magby, pumping the air again. <Let'th go!>
"All right, I think we'll do the sentret floor again, since the gym leader has one, and we can use all the practice we can get," Rosemary told her team, as they headed for the elevator.
All in all, it was an invigorating afternoon spent on the second floor. Bamf had proved true to his word that he was strong, although not so much in attack, as Rose had been disappointed to discover. He was capable of taking quite a lot of damage for a baby pokemon, but smog just didn't do a lot of damage. He had learned Ember during his final battle of the day, but sadly, seeing as he was so tired after repeated sentret attacks, Rose had decided to give Deet a few more battles, and then call it a day. Bamf sulked on the sidelines for a bit, as Deet plowed through some sentret, but after a while, he began to fall into a doze.
Getting the two pokemon to the pokemon center, and the hopeful beds for the evening was a chore during rush hour, as the pedestrians all crowded toward home. Rose, however, managed it, and brought the two pokemon before the nurse in their pokeballs. "Excuse me, could you heal these two?" Rosemary requested.
((Note: Bamf is now level 7, Deet level 8))

((I'm assuming these are your two levels from the giveaway? :3 ))
The nurse, now a thirty-something woman with short blond hair, nodded, and took Rosemary's pokeballs without another word. A few minutes passed after she slipped the two of them into the healing machine and pressed a few buttons on its keypad, but then the machine dinged to show it was done.
With one swift motion, the nurse removed Deet and Bamf's respective pokeballs and handed them back to the trainer. "Here you go, all done."

((Umm, I'm raising both Deet and Bamf to level 10 'causa the giveaway -- just taking a few posts to do it in, since it's cheat-y like to pretend that they never have to see a nurse. Besides time skips are fun.))
"Thanks ma'am," Rose said, accepting the pokeballs. "I still have my room reserved for the night, right? I'm likely to be in Ruby City for two more days, so can I extend that reservation? Or will I have to share with another trainer?"
