 Class #1 - The Basics
« Thread Started on Aug 8, 2007, 7:00pm »

Ah, a new term. Professor Vervain shuffled the papers on his desk wit an expectant air. His new Level One Class would be shuffling any minute. Luckily the term was fresh and new, and he had yet to meet any of the troublemakers he expected. There was always one every class. Well, the thin man cracked his knuckles expectantly, time to get to work.

William Hamlet came into the classroom looking at his watch he was glad, he had ten minutes before class started, under his arm was another journal of sorts, only it looked brand new and never had the spin cracked open. But he planned to start using it today, filling it up with the notes that would be given by the teacher, He picked one of the front row seats in the middle, a perfect location he felt for learning about what was needed to succeed in the class room, he looked around, order and organization, he missed these classrooms back home.

Alexandria Carpathia, or just Alex, comes in a few minutes later, glancing around the room, she shrugs, and sits down two seats from William.

"Right," Professor Vervain said, picking up one of the sheets of paper lying on the desk. He moved in front of the room, taping a pencil to his stubble covered jaw. "You, with the books," he pointed at William with the eraser. "You're Hamlet -- like the Bard's work. And you with the notebook are Carpathia, Bram Stoker's mountains. Well they were called the Carpathians, but same difference. Well, we'll wait for the rest of the class to arrive --,"

Ari burst through the door, looking out of breath. Professor Vervain raised an eyebrow. "Lost your watch did you? You still have a few minutes."

"Er," Ari looked around nervously, her borrowed sentret peering at the professor from her perch on the human's back pack. She quickly bowed to the professor on the assumption that pretending that she hadn't been chasing her nervous starter through the halls on the first day of school was probably the best place to start. "I'm Arielle Corsi. Er, Ari, that is."

"Right," Professor Vervain made another mark on the list. "Corsi like Corsica. Well, sit down. Now that you're here I'm certain the chair won't try to run away from you."

Ari walked over to a seat by the window, and sat down. At least there was a fairly nice view of the school grounds from here.

Professor Vervain looked at his watch again, and leaned his lanky frame against the edge of the desk. "Well, for those of you that got here a bit early, how about a bit of a warm up? Miss Carpathia when you know an answer raise your notebook in the air, and then scribble it down for us if I choose to call on you. Now, between the three of you, how much experience would you say you have with pokemon training? Have you battled before, used a pokedex, stayed up all night nursing your pet meowth over a furball, whatever. What's your experience?"

William Hamlet leaned back, he was going to wait for someone to answer first, he didn't want to be the first one to answer all the questions... but at the same time, he was judging the time to see if anyone else would go before him... he just didn't want to waste too much time.

Elroy strolled nonchalantly into the classroom, completely calm and carefree. Why let anyone know he had sprinted all the way here? Taking the front row seat closest to the door, he stared at the professor. He was shocked that someone like himself had any sense at all. A man like Professor Vervain, or what Elroy presumed his name to be, should be training in some run down gym rather than teaching in such a fine establishment. Not too fine, though.

Not varee praysteegeus, to let peepul like thees ine.

Setting his single notebook and pen on the desk before him, Elroy turned his head to the class, wondering why there was such a silence. There was not a talkative one among them. The teen chanced that quickly.

"Elroy Guischard. Wha' doos one make 'ove that?", Elroy announced, seeming to direct the statement to both the class and teacher, "..professaur..." A word most would think simple to utter seemed to struggle against his barely parted lips. Part of Elroy truly doubted this man's credibility as an educator. The headmistress seemed smart enough, though. His trust in her outweighed his doubt. For now.

(Like the Carpathian Moutains, read that one before.)

Alex paused to think, she did have some experience, mostly with psychic pokemon when she worked with Sabrina, so she raised her notebook in the air.

"Ah. I seem to have a frog," Professor Vervain observed dryly. "Doubt I'll need a mnemonic for you Mr. Guischard. Now, no one wants to share what they know? Yes, Miss Corsi?" he inquired as Ari's hand rose.

"Well, it would be easier for us to say what we know if you handed out a syllabus, that way we could pick and choose what we already know about," Ari pointed out. It seemed only logical.

"True. I really shouldn't have tried to tax your poor minds so much so early in the day by making you think," Professor Vervain's voice was deadpan serious. "I don't have any use for syllabuses. They scare students who can't read, and in a trainer's school you get quite a few, they make life too predictable for kids who know how to work the system, and with my classes they're shot by week two.

"So, I ask you again, what do you know about pokemon? I only bite heads off when I haven't had coffee, and you all look a lot dumber sitting there with your mouths shut than you'll sound answering the simple question. Miss Carpathia, thank you!" he pointed at the pokepath, "A credit to you for volunteering to go first."

William looked around... and waited for Alex to finish writing and then he would speak, he felt that he should not talk till someone else would speak... he was glade that someone else had risen their hand... figuratively speaking of course this time, but he knew now would be safe.

He too raised his hand to answer the question seeing that another had done so.

Alex scribbles down an answer, it reads: "Back in Saffron City, I worked with different kinds of pokemon with the Gym Leader, Sabrina. I usualy would work with pokemon that where newly-caught or abused to help them get more used to humans, I can't say it always worked, but it did help sometimes."

Professor Vervain read off Alex's notebook to the class before handing it back to her, and nodding. "That's one aspect of training, certainly," he said, as a piece of chalk rose in the air behind him, and began to scribble on the black board: "What Do Trainers Do?"

"Often trainers get called in to deal with wild pokemon that have entered human settlements, usually to bad effect. Most pokemon seem to have a sort of block about which is stronger: fluffy fur, or a speeding car. It's assumed because you go out into the wild and deal with pokemon on a day to day basis more closely than any pet owner that you know what you're doing when it comes to those who've been injured or abused. Miss Corsi, before you burst, then you Mr. Hamlet. So, Miss Corsi, what do you know?"

"Well, I'm confident with type match ups, stat ratios, and move sets, item combos, and all the basic stuff from my previous classes at the Violet Academy," Ari blurted out, her cheeks still darkened from the rebuke earlier. "I'm also comfortable with fishing. So I guess, I'm more experienced with battling," she looked very smug as she said this.

"And they can speak once you show them the way," Professor Vervain smiled, as if he had just proved a point to some being on high. "Yes, battling is another key aspect of a trainer's life. Mr. Hamlet, grace us with your knowledge."

"And I a toad", Elroy retorted, grinning devilishly. He could tell that this class would be fun. Rolling his eyes, the teen glanced in Ari's direction, scoffing quietly. He hoped that Professor Vervain would crush her like the little vermin she was. "I'm sure yoo wood know abou' illiteracee", Elroy taunted, wondering how his professor would react. He seemed like the kind to always have a comeback.

Thees classe ess so interestiing....

"Oo've 'ad coffee?", Elroy muttered, already bored of the class. He craned his neck to try and read the mute girl's scribblings. Mr. Vervain did them the honor of reading it to them. A charity case a charity worker? The world never ceased to amaze him.

Boring...

"Doo yoar's talke?", Elroy asked, trying to keep himself from bursting out with laughter. More a cackle than a laugh, it would be.

"Or Mr. Guischard could entertain us for a moment," Professor Vervain rounded on the french teen. "Of course. Unlike some I woke up early enough to make it. Now, Mr. Guischard, come, enlighten us with what you already know. Or perhaps you would be comfortable telling us what you came here expecting to learn."

"If it's possible to decipher what he says," Ari muttered, before seeing the warning finger raised from the teacher. "Corsi, another unwarranted insult and you'll loose a credit."

Wendy yawned as she stumbled into the classroom. She'd gotten up extra early to fix her hair - her new bed made it a mess - and look up articles on the internet about rattata and raticate.

So she was tired.

And...late? she thought, aghast, when she saw class already in session. Fuming inside at herself, she shuffled over to her seat in silence, trying to figure out what was going on.

Are they telling him what they already know? What! But...no, maybe it would be better to go last. I could be more impressive, that way, she thought, pondering whether or not to raise her hand. Better not seem overeager. I don't know this teacher, so I don't know how short he gets with boastful students.

And she gained another opponent, as she realized she had to dissect her teacher's tactics before she could launch her attack.

Which was difficult, seeing as she was still a bit tired and frazzled from the whole new school.

"Oh, noo, Monsieur Vervain, it ees not necissaree. Yoo are dooing soch a 'onderful jobe.", Elroy replied, sitting erect in his seat to stare directly at the professor. "I am sure yoo deed wake up earlee. Bags doo not form temselves. Bot, that ees not importante. Well, proffesseur, I am no expert. 'Owevar, my mothar deed 'ave a coffee shup. Manee trainairs wood entar with pokemon. Awfelee boring like their trainairs, they were. I expect too learn thee basices, proffesseur. That ees all, een theese classe." Smiling up at Professor Vervain like an innocent child, the teen shot a glare in Ari's direction. Such a weak little rat, but such a big mouth. Every bit of her annoyed Elroy.

At leest that one een thee meedle ees quiet. I could not stande two fools.

"Thank yoo fore repraymanding 'er. I cannot 'elp my accente.", Elroy thanked the professor, adding, "But I cane controll my mouthe. Pleese, I weesh to 'ear from thee ethores." Folding his hands of the desk, and inclining his head thoughtfully, all traces of the snooty French kid seemed to vanish. He had already stirred the pot enough for one day. Professor Vervain was sure to know he was just testing the waters. As Wendy entered, Elroy waved politely, greeting her with a friendly "'Allo!"

William sat up in his chair more, he was not slumped in his chair nor was he paying attention to the interruption by Mr. Guischard as he called him now, if one was rude and they are a peer, he would give them the cool attitude of a colleague. But at the same time he would not be as helpful, a pet peeve of his was disrespect to a teacher and interrupting just to be a wise guy.

"One aspect of training that I fear I have seen some trainer forget and not remember is that each Pokemon has a different personality, for example, Jacks the Zigzagoon that the school has kindly lend me is one that seems to not like Pokemon battling, with the fainting, which I observed when I watched some home videos of my dad and Grandfather holding a friendly battle. Where as another Pokemon in my family lived to battle and nothing else, each Pokemon has a different personality, and that includes the same species, why I bet there is a Braver then anything Caterpi out there, along with the most scared Charizard as well." He smiled a little.

"Also, I know for a fact that some trainers, and I have personal contact with this, can become obsessed by things to the point that they train their minds and their teams for certain things, rather they be the League, contests, or personal quests of bettering themselves." He blinked and realized that maybe he was rambling but he had one more thing to say.

"A trainer must learn to deal with the personality of each of their Pokemon, otherwise they will never become as successful as they want to be. As well as always open on new ideas and Pokemon behaviors, along with mood swings in some of them... kind of like teaching a class, only most trainers only have students of six pupils that they must learn to cope with and then teach in their own ways." He felt that he should talk about that part of Pokemon training since that was just as important as the human aspect of it. But at the same time... he could not avoid adding a mental image to help describe what he was talking about.

Mew was panicking extremely badly. His hiar blew through the wind and he didn't like it. Grabber was on his shoulders, holding on for dear life. Yanking the door open, the youngf teen surveyed the room. Seeing some room, he took a seat in the back of class, as far away as possible. Please don't let the teacher call on me, he thought. Mew shivered and waited in his seat.

Professor Verain was about to rise to the challenge Elroy posed, when William quickly stepped in and began to state his beliefs. Vervain nodded, and the piece of chalk scribbled faster. "Right you are. Often trainers forget even to speak to their pokemon outside of competition and battle. This will eventually lead to them turning on you, and ignoring your orders. Never forget that interaction is the key to a strong and healthy relationship. And if I discover someone has forgotten that the results will not be pleasant," he smiled brightly. "Nor will they be enjoyable if people come to class late," he said as Wendy and Mew burst in one right after the other. "Luckily for you the bell has not yet rung. We are merely engaging in a discussion of what we do know and what we don't know. You -- you're Chang, right?" he asked Wendy. "Chang as in the Ravenclaw Seeker from Book Three. And Pinky," he called out to Mew, "you're Denal, am I correct? Denal like denial. So, either of you have anything to add to the sum knowledge of what it takes to be a trainer?" he asked, waving at the board.

"So far we've got Caring for Strays, Ferals, etc., Battling and all of the attendant stuff, which is the bulk of my classes, and Interaction between team members -- because you are a team. Your job is to be there for your pokemon, to think ahead, and see the long term. Their job is to get better, and fight with you. They're risking massive injuries and wounds if you get things wrong, and they're risking this for you, so show them a lot of respect."

His attention span shortening once more, Elroy raised his hand. It was only a formality. He would speak anyways, just like the others.

"Proffesseur, speaking 'ove teem membars, eesint eet importante foar pokemon to inteyracked weeth one anothir..?", Elroy inquired, more of a statement than a question. "Maybee wee should bring out our pokemon, so they may bee abel too converse, and wee may see diffeyrent pokemon personalitees op close?" While proud, the Level One was sure his snubull could use some peer interaction. Vivian was so serious, forever standing guard like some sort of sentinel. And she was so beautiful, too. Well, for a loaner pokemon.

"Go a head. Unless you have a pokemon that acts like a three year old in a restaurant I actually prefer it if your pokemon are out and about," Professor Vervain replied.

Arielle sighed. Her spook-able sentret leapt primly up to her desk and looked around enthusiastically, rubbing her paws together and sleeking down her shiny fur. <Oh, this is much better than the noisy halls,> the normal type said, looking around at the faces, before looking up at Ari and saying quietly: <You are certain that we will not have to battle?>

"Sadly, I doubt it," the dark haired girl sighed again.
